Caldas Aulete’s partir entry records a partir de for an initial boundary and for a basis used in reasoning. The reference was checked on October 21, 2026.
- A partir de amanhã, vou estudar de manhã. — “Starting tomorrow, I’m going to study in the morning.”
- A entrada está liberada a partir das nove. — “Entry is allowed from nine onward.”
- O novo horário vale a partir de segunda-feira. — “The new schedule applies from Monday onward.”
In these examples, the time after de is the beginning of the relevant period. With a clock time, de plus as becomes das. The phrase does not provide an ending. If you need both boundaries, ask when the place closes or how long the new schedule applies.
A starting point, a deadline and a duration answer different questions
- Você pode entrar a partir das nove. — “You can enter from nine onward.”
- Preciso receber o arquivo até as nove. — “I need to receive the file by nine.”
- Vou ficar por duas horas. — “I’m going to stay for two hours.”
The first tells you when access starts. The second gives the latest acceptable time for receiving a file. The third measures the length of a stay. Do not translate every English from, by or for with the same Portuguese phrase. Work out whether the speaker is opening a period, closing one or measuring it.
For appointments that cross time zones, repeat the actual date and location. A relative expression such as amanhã still depends on whose day is being discussed. Review deadlines and appointment times when the endpoint matters.
Original dialogue: do not arrive before access starts
A: Posso deixar a mala às oito?
Can I leave the suitcase at eight?
B: Só a partir das nove. Antes disso, não tem ninguém aqui.
Only from nine onward. Before then, no one is here.
A: Então vou chegar às nove e meia.
Then I’m going to arrive at nine thirty.
B: Nesse horário, pode deixar a mala.
At that time, you can leave the suitcase.
B gives an opening boundary, and A selects a later time. The suitcase example is original practice, not a policy of an actual hotel. Notice that permission to leave a bag says nothing about room access: ask separately for the service you need.
Starting prices and the basis of an explanation
- Passeios a partir de cem reais. — “Tours starting at one hundred reais.”
- Qual é o valor total para duas pessoas? — “What is the total price for two people?”
- A partir dessas informações, podemos escolher um horário. — “Based on that information, we can choose a time.”
The price is fictional language practice. A starting amount is a lower boundary, not a complete quote for every option. Ask about the selected date, number of people and inclusions before assuming the total. In the final example, information is the basis of a decision: there is no clock or price boundary. The following noun helps identify which meaning is intended.
Practice: beginning, endpoint or basis?
- Does a partir de sexta-feira mean no later than Friday?
- Combine a partir de with as dez.
- You need access at eight, but it starts at nine. Is eight inside the offered period?
- A fictional sign says a partir de cem reais. Ask for the actual two-person total.
- Translate a partir dessas informações in a planning discussion.
Suggested answers and explanations
- No. It means from Friday onward. A latest acceptable date needs a deadline expression such as até sexta-feira.
- A partir das dez. De and as combine as das.
- No. Ask about a different arrangement rather than treating the starting time as a deadline.
- Qual é o valor total para duas pessoas? The starting amount alone does not supply that quote.
- “Based on that information.” Here the phrase introduces a basis for reasoning, not a time.
