Caldas Aulete’s bem entry includes ainda bem as an expression of satisfaction about a desired outcome. The reference was checked on October 21, 2026.
- Ainda bem que você avisou. — “Good thing you let me know.”
- Ainda bem que trouxe um casaco. — “Good thing I brought a coat.”
- Ainda bem que a loja está aberta. — “I’m glad the shop is open.”
Que introduces the situation behind the relief. The verb can refer to a past action or a present state: avisou and trouxe describe completed actions, while está describes the current opening. The expression is not restricted to things that happened long ago.
A short ainda bem depends on the previous turn
A: Eu achei a chave.
I found the key.
B: Ainda bem! A gente já estava procurando em todo lugar.
What a relief! We were already looking everywhere.
A: Estava no bolso do outro casaco.
It was in the pocket of the other coat.
B: Então podemos sair agora.
Then we can leave now.
B can omit the que clause because the news is immediately available: the key was found. A fuller reply would be Ainda bem que você achou a chave — “Good thing you found the key.” In a new conversation, however, a bare ainda bem may leave the listener wondering what you are reacting to.
The exchange is original written practice. To rehearse it, change the lost object and where it was found, then keep the relief tied to that new fact.
Relief is different from hope
- Tomara que a loja esteja aberta. — “I hope the shop is open.”
- Ainda bem que a loja está aberta. — “I’m glad the shop is open.”
- Espero que você consiga chegar a tempo. — “I hope you manage to arrive on time.”
The first speaker wants an uncertain situation to be true. The second presents the shop being open as the reason for relief. Do not attach a hopeful wish to ainda bem just because both sentences have a positive attitude. For the hope pattern and its subjunctive forms, use tomara que.
In real messages, use the information you actually have. If you have not checked whether the shop is open, the hope sentence fits that uncertainty. An example in a language guide is not a current opening-hours listing.
Make the reason clear and pay attention to tone
- Ainda bem que confirmamos o endereço antes de sair. — “Good thing we confirmed the address before leaving.”
- Ainda bem que ninguém se machucou. — “I’m glad no one got hurt.”
- Que bom que deu certo. — “I’m glad it worked out.”
A positive reaction can acknowledge one good fact within a difficult situation. Being glad no one was hurt does not mean the entire event was pleasant. Naming the fact makes that limit clear. Que bom can also express happiness about news, while ainda bem often highlights relief; their uses can overlap.
Tone can reverse the apparent meaning. After being ignored for a long time, Ainda bem que você lembrou de mim — “Good thing you remembered me” — could be sincere or pointed. In a sensitive exchange, add a clear explanation rather than relying on the listener to decode irony.
Practice: relief, hope or unclear tone?
- Translate Ainda bem que você avisou.
- You have not checked whether a shop is open. Choose ainda bem or tomara.
- A friend finds the missing ticket. Give a short relieved response.
- Does being glad nobody was hurt mean being happy about the accident?
- Why can a written ainda bem que você lembrou be ambiguous?
Suggested answers and explanations
- “Good thing you let me know” or “I’m glad you told me.” It reacts to the notice.
- Tomara que a loja esteja aberta. This expresses hope about an uncertain state.
- Ainda bem! The preceding news supplies the reason.
- No. The relief concerns the absence of injuries. The rest of the event may still be upsetting.
- The tone and relationship may make it sincere relief or a pointed complaint. Add the reason when clarity matters.
