Aqui ou Para Levar? Answer Choice Questions in Portuguese

You hear Aqui ou para levar? and answer Sim. The staff still does not know where you want to eat. A choice question asks you to select an option, not just confirm that you heard the question.

Listen for the alternatives on either side of ou

Ou means “or.” In Aqui ou para levar? — “Here or to go?” the options are eating here and taking the order away. Answer Para levar, por favor. or Vou comer aqui. — “I’ll eat here.”

Compare Você quer levar? — “Do you want to take it away?” That is a yes/no question, so Quero, sim fits. Listen to the whole question before choosing your answer. A familiar first word may not reveal which kind of response is needed.

Choose, accept either, or ask for another option

    • Prefiro a primeira opção. — I prefer the first option.
    • Qualquer uma das duas serve. — Either of the two works.
    • Nenhuma das duas. Tem outra opção? — Neither. Is there another option?
    • Pode explicar a segunda opção? — Can you explain the second option?

If the options are easy to name, name your choice instead of “the second one.” That avoids an error if you misremembered the order. “Either works” is appropriate only when it really does; it can sound like permission for the other person to choose.

    A question that changes type

Staff: Você quer água? — Would you like water?
You: Quero, sim. — Yes, I would.
Staff: Com gás ou sem gás? — Sparkling or still?
You: Sem gás, por favor. — Still, please.
Staff: Gelada ou em temperatura ambiente? — Chilled or at room temperature?
You: Em temperatura ambiente. — At room temperature.

The first reply confirms that you want water. The following replies specify two independent preferences. You can understand “water” and still miss the choices that follow. Do not assume the options or availability are identical everywhere; this is an invented ordering exchange.

    Practice identifying the answer slot

    1. Você prefere de manhã ou à tarde? You prefer the afternoon. Answer without saying only yes.
    2. Pode ser na terça ou na quinta? Neither day works. Say so and ask about Friday.
    3. Você quer café? You do. Is this asking you to choose between two named drinks?
    Show answers and explanations
    1. À tarde, por favor. — In the afternoon, please.
    2. Nesses dias não posso. Pode ser na sexta? — I can’t on those days. Could Friday work?
    3. No. Quero, sim. — Yes, I do — answers the offered drink. A later question may add choices.

Make a short set of mixed yes/no and choice questions. Have a partner vary their order. Your goal is to identify what information is missing, not to predict the next question from a rehearsed script.

    Frequently asked questions

Why is sim not enough for aqui ou para levar?

The speaker needs to know which option you choose. Say Aqui or Para levar, adding por favor if appropriate.

What if I do not understand one of the options?

Ask Pode explicar essa opção? or repeat the unfamiliar words as a clarification question before choosing.
