Meet Bruno and the teaching teamTrack a period rather than assume constant activity
Caldas Aulete’s longo entry records spatial and temporal uses of ao longo de, including a sequence or recurrence across a period. The reference was checked on October 21, 2026.
- Revisei as frases ao longo da semana. — “I reviewed the phrases over the course of the week.”
- Minha rotina mudou ao longo dos últimos meses. — “My routine changed over the last few months.”
- Fiz várias perguntas ao longo da conversa. — “I asked several questions during the conversation.”
Each sentence places an activity or development across a span. The questions may occur at separate points. The routine may change gradually. The phrase alone does not state an exact frequency, a total number of hours or an uninterrupted action. Add those details when they matter.
Use the noun after de to see what kind of span it is
- Há bancos ao longo do caminho. — “There are benches along the path.”
- Caminhamos ao longo do rio. — “We walked along the river.”
- Ao longo do passeio, fizemos duas paradas. — “Over the course of the outing, we made two stops.”
Caminho and rio give a physical line or route. Passeio can instead be treated as an event with a duration. The first sentence does not promise a bench at every point. If you need the next place to rest, ask Onde fica o próximo banco? — “Where is the next bench?” A general distribution is not a precise location.
Notice the contractions: de plus a semana becomes da semana; de plus o caminho becomes do caminho. Keep the full unit ao longo de together before adapting the article to its noun.
Original dialogue: two sessions, not an entire day
A: Você estudou o dia inteiro?
Did you study all day?
B: Não. Revisei um pouco ao longo do dia.
No. I reviewed a little over the course of the day.
A: Em quais momentos?
At what times?
B: De manhã, antes de sair, e à noite, depois do jantar.
In the morning before leaving, and at night after dinner.
The answer supplies two separate moments. It corrects the assumption of continuous work without denying that review happened. To retell it accurately, preserve the two sessions rather than turning ao longo do dia into “all day without a break.”
Compare across a span with the entire span
- Recebi três mensagens ao longo da manhã. — “I received three messages over the course of the morning.”
- Esperei a manhã inteira. — “I waited the whole morning.”
- A reunião começa às dez. — “The meeting starts at ten.”
The first distributes three events within a span. The second explicitly presents the whole morning as a waiting period. The third names one starting point. These are useful distinctions when you summarize someone’s day. Ao longo de may sometimes occur with continuous events, but continuity comes from the full sentence and situation, not from the phrase alone.
When discussing learning, state an observable change: Ao longo do mês, consegui entender mais partes do episódio — “Over the month, I managed to understand more parts of the episode.” This is a model for your own reflection, not a promised learning result.
Practice: map the span
- Does três ligações ao longo da tarde say the calls lasted all afternoon?
- Complete ao longo ___ últimos meses.
- Is ao longo do rio necessarily about time?
- Ask for the specific moments in someone’s day.
- Say you waited the whole morning, rather than received messages at scattered times.
Suggested answers and explanations
- No. It places three calls within the afternoon. Their duration is not given.
- Dos. De plus os becomes dos.
- No. It can describe a route along the river.
- Em quais momentos? — “At what times?” It requests detail that a general span does not provide.
- Esperei a manhã inteira. The entire period is explicitly part of the waiting description.
