Aproveitar in Portuguese: Use an Opportunity or Enjoy an Experience

Aproveitar can mean making good use of something or enjoying an opportunity or experience. Vou aproveitar o tempo para revisar means I will use the time to review. Aproveite a viagem wishes someone an enjoyable trip. The useful translation depends on what follows the verb.

Name the resource or opportunity you use

Caldas Aulete’s aproveitar entry records making good use of something and using a situation for a benefit. The reference was checked on October 21, 2026.

    • Vou aproveitar o tempo para revisar as perguntas. — “I’m going to use the time to review the questions.”
    • Aproveitamos a manhã livre para caminhar. — “We made use of the free morning to go for a walk.”
    • Quero aproveitar melhor esta conversa. — “I want to make better use of this conversation.”

Tempo, manhã and conversa identify what is being used. Para plus an infinitive can explain the purpose. None of these sentences guarantees a learning result or says every free minute must become work. The expression lets you describe what you choose to do with an available opportunity.

Aproveitar para introduces another action while the opportunity exists

    • Já que estamos aqui, vou aproveitar para perguntar uma coisa. — “Since we’re here, I’ll take the opportunity to ask something.”
    • Posso aproveitar para confirmar o endereço? — “May I take the opportunity to confirm the address?”
    • Ela aproveitou a pausa para mandar uma mensagem. — “She used the break to send a message.”

The opportunity may be explicit, as with a pause, or clear from the situation. The sentence tells us why another action fits at that moment. You can make a conversational transition politely by asking rather than assuming the other person has unlimited time.

Compare bringing an issue to attention: aproveitar para focuses on the opportunity used to act; bringing up a topic focuses on the conversational move itself.

Original dialogue: use a pause for one precise question

A: Temos dois minutos antes de começar.
We have two minutes before starting.

B: Posso aproveitar para confirmar a próxima data?
May I take the opportunity to confirm the next date?

A: Pode. O que ficou em dúvida?
    Yes. What was unclear?

B: Se a conversa é na terça ou na quarta.
Whether the conversation is on Tuesday or Wednesday.

B uses a small opportunity for one concrete detail. The two-minute limit helps keep the exchange focused. This original activity is not a recording or a current schedule. To rehearse it, replace the date question with a place or pronunciation question that actually matters to you.

Enjoying is different from liking—and a pronoun can change the tone

    • Aproveite a viagem! — “Enjoy your trip!”
    • Gostei da viagem. — “I liked the trip.”
    • Quero aproveitar a oportunidade. — “I want to make use of the opportunity.”
    • Ele se aproveitou da minha boa vontade. — “He took advantage of my goodwill.”

A wish before a trip, an evaluation afterward and use of an opportunity are different speech acts. In the final example, aproveitar-se de has a negative exploitation reading. Do not assume every use of aproveitar describes harmless enjoyment. Read the pronoun, preposition and situation.

For simply describing having fun, continue with se divertir. That does not replace aproveitar in every time-use or opportunity sentence. Learn the meaning that fits what the speaker is doing.

    Practice: resource, opportunity or experience?

    1. Translate vou aproveitar a pausa para perguntar.
    2. Wish someone an enjoyable trip.
    3. Say you liked a trip afterward.
    4. Does aproveitar-se de someone’s goodwill always mean enjoy their company?
    5. Ask to use a brief opening to confirm an address.
    Suggested answers and explanations
    1. “I’ll use the break to ask” or “I’ll take the opportunity during the break to ask.” The pause supplies the opportunity.
    2. Aproveite a viagem! It is a wish, not a report that the trip has already happened.
    3. Gostei da viagem. It reports an evaluation rather than giving a wish.
    4. No. It can mean exploiting their goodwill. The pronoun, preposition and context matter.
    5. Posso aproveitar para confirmar o endereço? It names one useful action and asks for the opening.
