Going to a Churrasco in Brazil: Ask What to Bring in Portuguese — Practice

A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.

Accept the invitation and confirm the time

Churrasco is a barbecue gathering or the food prepared for one. Ask for the date and approximate arrival time, especially if the invitation was casual or plans are still being coordinated.

Brazilian hosts and gatherings vary, so avoid assuming a single rule about when guests should arrive or what the event includes. Confirm the details with the person who invited you.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Accept the invitation and confirm the time
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Adorei o convite. Que horas você acha melhor eu chegar?I love the invitation. What time do you think I should arrive?
Vai ser no sábado mesmo? Is it still happening on Saturday?

Ask whether the host wants you to bring something

A direct, friendly question is o que eu posso levar? (what can I bring?). The host may suggest a drink, side dish, dessert, or say that nothing is needed. Let the person decide rather than assuming.

If you have a dietary need, mention it briefly and ask what options will be available. An open question works better than assuming the menu will match your preference.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask whether the host wants you to bring something
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Precisa que eu leve alguma coisa?Would you like me to bring anything?
Tem alguma opção sem carne? Is there a meat-free option?

Thank the host and keep plans clear

When the host answers, repeat the item or time so you both have the same plan. If your arrival changes, send a short update rather than leaving the host to guess.

At the gathering, obrigado or obrigada (thank you) and estava tudo muito bom (everything was very good) are simple ways to show appreciation. Use a comment that reflects what you actually enjoyed.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Ask what time to arrive and whether the host wants you to bring something; plans and expectations vary from gathering to gathering.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
