Your First Brazil Trip: What Portuguese Should You Learn First?

If your trip is coming up, it is tempting to collect hundreds of phrases. A better starting point is to learn how to open an interaction, make a clear request, and recover when you do not understand—then add language for the situations on your itinerary.

Prioritize language that keeps a conversation moving

Before memorizing niche vocabulary, learn a few building blocks you can use almost anywhere: a greeting, por favor (“please”), obrigado/obrigada (“thank you”), and a way to ask someone to repeat or slow down. The best phrases depend on your plans, so focus on situations you are likely to encounter.

    A practical learning order

    1. Greetings and introductions. Learn to say hello, introduce yourself, and respond to a simple greeting.
    2. Numbers and basic questions. Practice prices, times, quantities, and questions beginning with onde (where), quando (when), and quanto (how much/how many).
    3. Clarification and help. Prepare to ask for repetition, a slower pace, or assistance. These phrases are useful across many situations.
    4. Transport and directions. Add words for your actual arrival, routes, and planned activities rather than studying every transport term.
    5. Food and everyday purchases. Learn to order, ask what something is, and check the price or payment options.
    6. One itinerary-specific topic. Choose vocabulary for a beach day, museum, hike, family visit, or other activity you have planned.

This is a priority framework, not a day-by-day study schedule. If you have two weeks, use the separate 14-day trip preparation plan to organize daily practice.

    Learn patterns, then personalize them

A small sentence pattern is easier to adapt than a phrase tied to one object. For example, Pode me ajudar? means “Can you help me?” Add a detail if you can: Pode me ajudar a encontrar esta rua? (“Can you help me find this street?”). Keep the request short when you are nervous; communication does not need to be elaborate.

Practice the sound of complete phrases, not only isolated vocabulary. Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation varies, and hearing a phrase in context can help you recognize it when someone responds.

Match your study to the trip you are taking

If you have a hotel reservation, practice the words you need for check-in. If you plan to visit markets and cafés, prepare a few ordering and payment questions. If you are meeting friends or relatives, prioritize introductions and everyday conversation. Our Brazil trip guide groups practical language by situation, while the travel phrase quick reference is easier to scan for a fast review.

Learn about payment-specific vocabulary in our guide to paying in Brazil, and practice food orders with the Brazilian bakery phrases.

Remember that language is only one part of travel

Travel conditions, available services, and how much English people speak differ by place and person. Keep important addresses and reservation details accessible, use trusted local guidance, and ask for help when you need it. Portuguese can make interactions more personal, but you do not have to handle every situation alone.

    Frequently asked questions

What Portuguese should I learn first for Brazil?

Start with greetings, polite requests, numbers, directions, food and drink, payment questions, and ways to ask for repetition or help. Then add phrases for the specific places and activities in your itinerary.

Do I need to learn grammar before traveling to Brazil?

You do not need to master grammar before a trip. Learn useful sentence patterns in context and practice adapting them. Basic grammar can help you understand and create more than one memorized phrase.

Will people in Brazil understand beginner Portuguese?

Many people can understand simple, patient communication, but experiences vary by location and situation. Speak clearly, use polite language, ask for repetition, and use other tools when needed.
