At a Brazilian Hair Salon: Book Color, Highlights, or Styling — Practice

A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.

    October 20, 2026 5 min practice

Book the service and confirm what is included

To book a hair salon in Brazil, say “Queria marcar um horário para…” and name the service: coloração (coloring), luzes (highlights) or escova (a blow-dry). Then confirm the date, price and whether washing or finishing is included.

This guide focuses on booking and discussing color or styling. If you only want a haircut, use the related haircut guide for length, layers and trimming the ends. The distinction helps you explain your actual goal.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Book the service and confirm what is included
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Queria marcar um horário para fazer luzes.I’d like to book an appointment for highlights.
Vocês têm horário na sexta à tarde?Do you have an appointment available on Friday afternoon?
    A escova está incluída?Is the blow-dry included?

Describe the result without overpromising a photograph

A reference photo can help you explain color and finish. “Quero um tom parecido com este” asks for a similar shade; “Não quero clarear muito” states a limit. Ask the professional what is possible for your hair and what the service involves.

Do not assume that a quoted price covers every step. Explain what you want before confirming the booking, and ask whether any additional service changes the total.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Describe the result without overpromising a photograph
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Quero um tom parecido com este.I’d like a shade similar to this.
Não quero clarear muito.I don’t want to go much lighter.
Prefiro um resultado mais natural.I prefer a more natural-looking result.
Isso muda o valor total?Does that change the total price?

    Confirm time, price and finishing

“Quanto tempo leva?” asks how long the appointment takes. “Quanto fica no total?” asks the total cost. Ask about payment only after you know what is being quoted. “Precisa de sinal?” asks whether a deposit is required without assuming that every salon takes one.

Repeat the day and time back. Sexta at three in the afternoon is sexta-feira às três da tarde. It is easy to confuse dates or service names in a fast conversation.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Confirm time, price and finishing
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Quanto tempo leva? How long does it take?
Quanto fica no total, com a finalização?What is the total, including finishing?
Precisa de sinal para reservar? Is a deposit needed to reserve?
Só confirmando: sexta-feira às três da tarde?Just confirming: Friday at three in the afternoon?

    An original booking conversation

Practice the client’s turns first, then switch roles. The time and quoted details are fictional practice examples. Confirm the actual service and price directly with the salon.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: An original booking conversation
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Cliente: Oi! Queria marcar um horário para coloração.Client: Hi! I’d like to book an appointment for coloring.
Recepcionista: Temos sexta-feira às três da tarde.Receptionist: We have Friday at three in the afternoon.
Cliente: Ótimo. Quero um tom parecido com o da foto.Client: Great. I’d like a shade similar to the one in the photo.
Recepcionista: A profissional vai avaliar com você antes de começar.Receptionist: The stylist will discuss it with you before starting.
Cliente: Certo. A lavagem e a finalização estão incluídas?Client: Okay. Are washing and finishing included?
Recepcionista: A lavagem está incluída. A escova é cobrada à parte.Receptionist: Washing is included. The blow-dry is charged separately.
Cliente: Pode confirmar o total antes do serviço?Client: Can you confirm the total before the service?

    Check your understanding before agreeing

À parte means separately charged; incluído means included. A polite “Pode explicar de novo?” is better than agreeing to something you did not understand. If you need to reschedule, “Preciso remarcar meu horário” communicates the change clearly.

You do not need a perfect accent to be precise. Prepare your service, preferred result, availability and one question about the total. Rehearse those four pieces in the app or aloud before the appointment.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Check your understanding before agreeing
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
    A escova é cobrada à parte?Is the blow-dry charged separately?
Pode explicar de novo, por favor? Can you explain again, please?
Preciso remarcar meu horário.I need to reschedule my appointment.

Remember: Book a color or styling appointment. Name the service, give your availability, state one preference and confirm what the total includes.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Queria marcar um horário para fazer luzes.

Context: Book the service and confirm what is included

Vocês têm horário na sexta à tarde?

Context: Book the service and confirm what is included

    A escova está incluída?

Context: Book the service and confirm what is included

Quero um tom parecido com este.

Context: Describe the result without overpromising a photograph

Choose the language for the situation

Now use the explanation to decide what fits the situation. Check the reason for the answer, not just the option you chose.

You want highlights. Which phrase names that service?
    A escova é cobrada à parte means…
How do you check the appointment time?

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

      Show a Portuguese answer

      Prefiro um resultado mais natural.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Book a color or styling appointment. Name the service, give your availability, state one preference and confirm what the total includes.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
