Confirm the driver and destination before leaving

Start by confirming the destination: Você está indo para o Aeroporto? (Are you going to the airport?). If you booked through an app, check the vehicle and driver details in the app before getting in. This language guide helps you communicate; use the service’s normal safety and verification features as well.

For a taxi, ask whether the driver can take you to a specific address. Show the address on your phone if pronunciation is difficult, then repeat the neighborhood or landmark to confirm the route.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Confirm the driver and destination before leaving
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Boa tarde. Você está indo para a Rua das Flores?Good afternoon. Are you going to Rua das Flores?
Pode me levar ao aeroporto, por favor?Could you take me to the airport, please?
Este é o carro da minha corrida? Is this the car for my ride?

Give a simple landmark or route instruction

Useful direction words include à direita (to the right), à esquerda (to the left), em frente (straight ahead), and perto de (near). If you need to explain a pickup point, name a visible landmark and point to it on a map. Short instructions are easier to follow in traffic than a long description.

You can ask the driver whether a route passes near a landmark or whether the trip will take a certain road. If you are unsure of the street name, show the map and confirm the destination displayed by the navigation app.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Give a simple landmark or route instruction
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Pode parar perto da entrada principal? Can you stop near the main entrance?
Vire à esquerda depois do semáforo.Turn left after the traffic light.
O hotel fica ao lado daquele mercado. The hotel is next to that market.

Ask about time, traffic, and payment

Ask Quanto tempo leva até lá? to ask how long the trip takes. To ask whether traffic is heavy, say Como está o trânsito? Payment methods and fares depend on the service and location, so confirm the app price or ask the taxi driver how the fare is calculated before you travel.

If you want to know whether card payment is accepted, ask before the trip ends. Rideshare apps show trip details on screen, while taxi arrangements may vary. Keep your question simple and verify any amount shown by the service.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask about time, traffic, and payment
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Quanto tempo leva até o centro? How long does it take to get downtown?
Como está o trânsito agora? How is traffic right now?
Posso pagar com cartão?Can I pay by card?

    Use a short trip conversation

Practice the trip in four turns: confirm the car or taxi, state the destination, clarify a landmark, and ask to stop at the right entrance. Save the address on your phone so you can show it if the street is unfamiliar or difficult to pronounce.

Connect this guide to Real Life Portuguese lessons on directions, public transportation, and hotel check-in. I Speak Portuguese teachers can role-play a ride to the airport or a hotel so you can rehearse before traveling. For real trips, check current service details in the app or with the local provider.

Pode parar aqui, perto da porta? Can you stop here, near the door?

Remember: Confirm the ride and destination, use short landmark instructions, and verify the fare and payment method through the service you are using.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Confirm the ride and destination, use short landmark instructions, and verify the fare and payment method through the service you are using.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
