First Clinic Visit in Brazil: Portuguese for Check-In and Forms — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Confirm the appointment at reception
Recepção is reception, and consulta is an appointment or consultation. Give your name and appointment time, then ask whether you should check in there. If you have a confirmation message, show it to staff.
A consulta particular usually refers to a self-pay appointment. If you are using a health plan, say the plan name and ask which information the clinic needs to verify it.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Tenho uma consulta às duas, no nome de… | I have an appointment at two under the name… |
| É aqui que faço o check-in? | Is this where I check in? |
Ask which forms and details are required
Atendimento means service or care in this context, while cadastro refers to registration. Ask whether you need to complete a form and which details are required. The clinic can tell you what documents apply to your appointment.
If you do not understand a form, ask a staff member to explain the field. Do not guess at a health or insurance detail you are unsure about.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Preciso preencher algum formulário? | Do I need to fill out a form? |
| Você pode me explicar este campo? | Could you explain this field to me? |
Check the next step and ask for clarification
Before leaving reception, ask where to wait and how you will be called. If the clinic gives you a return date or another instruction, repeat it back to make sure you understood.
A simple clarification phrase is pode repetir, por favor? (could you repeat that, please?). Use it whenever a direction, time, or document request is unclear.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Depois do cadastro, onde devo esperar? | After registration, where should I wait? |
| Pode repetir o horário da próxima consulta? | Could you repeat the time of the next appointment? |
Remember: Ask the clinic which steps and documents apply to your visit. This guide provides language practice; reception staff can confirm the current procedure.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask the clinic which steps and documents apply to your visit. This guide provides language practice; reception staff can confirm the current procedure.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
