Começar vs. Iniciar: How to Say ‘Start’ in Brazilian Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use começar for a person, activity, or event getting underway
Começar works in many everyday situations: beginning a class, starting work, opening a conversation, or starting to learn a skill. It can take a noun or an infinitive phrase, as in começar a estudar (start studying).
In casual Brazilian speech, começar is a flexible default when you are simply saying that an activity is beginning.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A aula começa às nove. | The class starts at nine. |
| Comecei a estudar português no ano passado. | I started studying Portuguese last year. |
| Vamos começar pelo primeiro exercício. | Let’s start with the first exercise. |
Use iniciar for a process or a more formal instruction
Iniciar often frames the start of a process, procedure, system, or formal activity. You may see it in instructions, work settings, or digital interfaces. In many contexts, começar is also possible, but iniciar gives the sentence a more structured tone.
Both verbs are regular -ar verbs in these examples. Conjugate the verb for the subject and keep the following noun or infinitive phrase clear.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Começar is a natural everyday choice for starting an activity; iniciar often suits processes and formal instructions. The meanings overlap in many situations.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
