Conosco vs. Com a Gente: How to Say ‘With Us’ in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use conosco for a compact form of ‘with us’
Conosco is the standard one-word form meaning “with us.” It works in both writing and speech, though in many casual conversations Brazilians often choose com a gente.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você pode vir conosco até a estação. | You can come with us to the station. |
| A professora conversou conosco depois da aula. | The teacher spoke with us after class. |
Use com a gente in relaxed conversation
Com a gente is a common conversational alternative. A gente takes a singular verb when it is the subject (“we are going”), but after com it forms a prepositional phrase: com a gente (“with us”). These are different grammatical roles.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quer almoçar com a gente? | Do you want to have lunch with us? |
| A gente vai sair às oito. | We are leaving at eight. |
Choose a form that fits the tone
Both forms are correct. Conosco is concise and can sound more formal; com a gente is especially natural in casual speech. Keep the verb agreement attached to the sentence’s subject rather than to the object phrase.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A equipe vai viajar conosco amanhã. | The team is traveling with us tomorrow. |
| Fica com a gente mais um pouco. | Stay with us a little longer. |
Remember: Use conosco or com a gente for ‘with us’; choose based on tone and keep the sentence’s subject-verb agreement clear.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use conosco or com a gente for ‘with us’; choose based on tone and keep the sentence’s subject-verb agreement clear.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
