Describe Brazilian Landscapes in Portuguese: Serra, Mata, and Cachoeira — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Learn a few landscape nouns in context
Serra can refer to a mountain range or highland area, mata to forest or wooded land, and cachoeira to waterfall. Rio is river, while lago is lake. Regional usage and the exact landscape can differ, so treat these as helpful starting words rather than technical classifications.
Learn each noun with its article: a serra, a mata, a cachoeira, o rio, o lago. The article helps you remember grammatical gender and choose a matching adjective.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A cachoeira fica perto da serra. | The waterfall is near the mountain range. |
| O rio passa por uma área de mata. | The river passes through a forested area. |
Add adjectives to make the description specific
Adjectives usually agree with the noun’s gender and number. A paisagem is feminine, so you can say uma paisagem bonita; a trilha is also feminine, as in uma trilha longa. Rio is masculine: um rio largo.
Use grande, pequeno/pequena, bonito/bonita, and tranquilo/tranquila for simple descriptions. Add muito before an adjective for ‘very.’
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Visitamos uma serra bonita e uma cachoeira pequena. | We visited a beautiful mountain range and a small waterfall. |
| O rio é muito largo neste trecho. | The river is very wide along this stretch. |
Say what you saw or want to visit
Use tem… to say there is or there are something at a place: tem uma cachoeira perto daqui (there is a waterfall nearby). Use vimos or vi to say ‘we saw’ or ‘I saw’ when describing a completed visit.
A specific landscape word can help you ask for directions or follow a local recommendation. If you do not know a feature’s name, point to it on a map and ask what people call it.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O que mais dá para conhecer nesta região? | What else is there to explore in this region? |
| Como se chama aquela serra? | What is that mountain range called? |
Remember: Use one noun with its article, add a matching adjective, and make a sentence about a landscape you have seen or hope to visit.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use one noun with its article, add a matching adjective, and make a sentence about a landscape you have seen or hope to visit.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
