É Que in Portuguese: Introduce a Reason Without Translating Word for Word

Meet Bruno and the teaching teamListen for the reason the reply supplies
A reply beginning with é que often provides background that makes an action, difficulty or request understandable. It does not automatically mean that the speaker is asking a question.
Here is an original exchange: A: Você pode repetir? B: Claro. A: É que eu não ouvi o nome da rua. — “A: Can you repeat that? B: Of course. A: It’s just that I didn’t hear the street name.” The last turn explains the request to repeat.
A DELTA study by João Bosco Figueiredo-Gomes and Maria Medianeira de Souza discusses several functions of é que, including introducing and clarifying information at a turn opening. The article was consulted on October 21, 2026. This guide limits its practice to explanatory replies, rather than treating every occurrence as the same structure.
Compare a full because sentence and an explanatory reply
| Original Portuguese | English meaning | What the sentence does |
|---|---|---|
| Não respondi porque estava sem internet. | I didn’t reply because I had no internet. | Names the action and its reason in one sentence. |
| A: Você viu minha mensagem? B: Vi agora. É que eu estava sem internet. | A: Did you see my message? B: I just saw it. The thing is, I had no internet. | The reply explains the earlier lack of response. |
The facts can be similar while the structure differs. Do not mechanically replace porque inside every sentence with é que. Build a complete reply that makes the connection clear. Our cause-and-result guide covers porque and por isso separately.
The explanation can describe the past: É que eu estava sem internet. You do not need to change the opening to match every past-tense verb that follows. Treat the complete explanatory reply as the pattern you are learning.
Original dialogue: explain a practical constraint
A: Podemos conversar agora?
Can we talk now?
B: Você pode esperar dez minutos? É que estou terminando uma ligação.
Can you wait ten minutes? It’s just that I’m finishing a call.
A: Claro. Me avisa quando puder.
Of course. Let me know when you can.
B: Combinado. Já te chamo.
Agreed. I’ll get back to you shortly.
B gives a request, a reason and a next step. The explanation helps A understand the delay. It does not replace the request itself. If you need more time than you first said, update the other person instead of relying on the phrase to make the delay acceptable.
Distinguish é que from o que é que
Compare these two original turns:
- É que eu não entendi a última parte. — “It’s just that I didn’t understand the last part.” This explains why you need clarification.
- O que é que você não entendeu? — “What didn’t you understand?” This asks a question.
Listen for the whole frame, including o que. Our question-pattern guide develops that second structure. Recognising it helps you avoid treating an explanation as a question just because both contain é que.
For a real request, name the part you need: Pode repetir o horário? É que eu não entendi se é às oito ou às nove. — “Can you repeat the time? It’s just that I didn’t understand whether it’s at eight or nine.”
Clarify a mistaken impression carefully
A speaker can contrast an assumed reason with their actual reason. Try this original example:
Não é que eu não queira conversar. É que agora estou no trabalho. Podemos falar à noite?
“It’s not that I don’t want to talk. It’s that I’m at work right now. Can we talk tonight?”
The first part rejects an interpretation; the second supplies the explanation. Queira is a subjunctive form of querer in this model. Beginners can keep the message simpler: Quero conversar, mas agora estou no trabalho. Podemos falar à noite? — “I want to talk, but I’m at work right now. Can we talk tonight?”
Choose the shorter version if it is easier to say accurately. You do not need to add a contrast whenever you give a reason. The task is to make the situation understandable.
Practice: identify the job and build the reply
- Someone says É que meu celular estava sem bateria after explaining that they could not call. Is that a question or background for the missed call?
- Which asks what was unclear: É que eu não entendi or O que é que você não entendeu??
- You need someone to repeat a price because you missed the number. Give a request followed by an explanation beginning with é que.
- A friend thinks you do not want to talk, but you are at work. Give a clear reply and propose a later time.
Suggested answers and explanations
- Background for the missed call: “The thing is, my phone was out of battery.” The context tells you what the explanation refers to.
- O que é que você não entendeu? It asks “What didn’t you understand?” The other sentence supplies an explanation.
- Pode repetir o preço? É que eu não entendi o número. — “Can you repeat the price? It’s just that I didn’t understand the number.” It states both the requested action and its reason.
- Quero conversar, mas agora estou no trabalho. Podemos falar às oito? — “I want to talk, but I’m at work right now. Can we talk at eight?” This preserves the intention, constraint and proposed next step. It does not require the longer contrast pattern.
Use it as a listening and speaking task
Bruno’s available study material recommends giving a specific task to listening practice. This page turns that idea into a small exercise: identify what a reply explains, then give your own request and reason. The dialogues are original written practice, not a transcription of that material. For the broader routine, see planning a focused Portuguese study session.
Choose a fictional misunderstanding, delay or request to repeat. Say a complete reply with one truthful reason, then try a version with porque. Compare the structure rather than trying to make every word line up with English. You can bring a confusing reply to a trial lesson for spoken feedback.

Frequently asked questions
What does é que mean at the start of a Portuguese reply?
It can introduce an explanation, similar to the thing is or it is just that. The preceding conversation helps identify what is being explained.
Is é que the same as porque?
They can express related reasons in different structures. Não respondi porque estava sem internet combines action and reason; a separate reply can explain it with é que eu estava sem internet. Do not substitute mechanically.
Is é que always part of a question?
No. É que eu não entendi explains a problem; o que é que você não entendeu asks what was unclear. Listen to the complete frame.
Can an explanation beginning é que refer to the past?
Yes. É que eu estava sem internet explains a past situation. Learn the complete reply instead of changing the opening to match every verb that follows.
