Enfim in Portuguese: Wrap Up a Thought or Say Finally

Enfim can mark something that finally happened, but in a conversation it can also signal that the speaker is bringing a thought to a close. Listen to the next sentence: does it report a result, sum up the point or move the discussion forward?

    Two useful listening jobs

Caldas Aulete’s enfim entry distinguishes a finally-like meaning from a use that signals bringing a thought toward a conclusion. The reference was checked on October 21, 2026.

    • Enfim consegui terminar o texto. — “I finally managed to finish the text.”
    • Falamos de muita coisa. Enfim, o que você prefere fazer? — “We talked about a lot. Anyway, what would you rather do?”
    • Enfim, foi uma experiência interessante. — “All in all, it was an interesting experience.”

The English wording changes with the job. In the second example, “finally” would put more emphasis on delay than the Portuguese needs to. In the third, the speaker is offering a closing assessment. Do not infer irritation just because someone uses enfim; tone and context matter.

Finish the aside and return to a practical question

Long conversations can include stories, explanations and opinions before returning to the plan. Enfim can help mark that return. State the question after it so the other person knows what you need next.

A: Tem lugar que serve o café mais forte. Em outros, eu peço com leite.
Some places serve stronger coffee. At others, I order it with milk.

B: Eu também mudo o pedido dependendo do lugar.
I also change my order depending on the place.

A: Enfim, vamos naquela padaria perto de casa?
Anyway, shall we go to that bakery near home?

B: Vamos. A gente se encontra às dez.
    Yes. Let’s meet at ten.

This is original practice. The final question does not claim that coffee strength caused the decision. It ends the aside and proposes a destination. For restarting a conversation after an interruption rather than closing a digression, use our conversation-resumption guide.

Até que enfim adds an at-last reaction

    • Até que enfim chegou minha encomenda! — “My parcel finally arrived!”
    • Até que enfim conseguimos conversar. — “We finally managed to talk.”

This expression often highlights a wait. Directed at another person—Até que enfim você chegou!, “You finally got here!”—it can sound relieved, teasing or critical. If you simply want to welcome someone, Que bom que você chegou! — “I’m glad you’re here!” — avoids making their delay the point. Choose the greeting for the relationship, not just a dictionary match.

Enfim and em fim are not the same spelling

Write the connector as one word: enfim. In em fim de carreira, em and fim belong to a different phrase structure. You may also hear no fim da semana for the end of the week. Do not join every nearby em and fim just because they sound similar.

If your purpose is an endpoint rather than a conversational conclusion, compare no fim, no final and no fim das contas. For a waited-for event, afinal and finalmente provides another useful comparison. The words overlap in some contexts without doing the same job everywhere.

Practice: hear what is being concluded

    1. Which use appears in Enfim, qual dos dois horários funciona??
    2. Rewrite an at-last result with enfim: you finally finished the exercise.
    3. Could Até que enfim você respondeu! sound critical?
    4. Write the connector in one or two words.
    5. Close a food-topic aside and ask about the meeting time.
    Suggested answers and explanations
    1. It closes the preceding discussion and asks for the practical answer: “Anyway, which of the two times works?”
    2. Enfim terminei o exercício. It reports completion after the relevant sequence or wait.
    3. Yes. It can highlight a delayed reply. If criticism is not your aim, state your relief or thanks more directly.
    4. Enfim. The discourse connector is one word; em fim belongs to other grammatical phrases.
    5. Enfim, a que horas a gente se encontra? — “Anyway, what time are we meeting?” The question makes your next purpose clear.
