Estou com Calor vs. Sou Quente: Say ‘I’m Hot’ in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use estar com calor for how your body feels now
Brazilian Portuguese expresses physical sensations with estar com + noun: estou com calor (I feel hot), estou com frio (I feel cold), and estou com fome (I am hungry). The structure resembles ‘I am with heat,’ but it is the natural way to describe a temporary sensation.
Use estar because the feeling can change with the room, weather, or activity. The same pattern works for other current sensations: estou com sede, estou com sono, and estou com pressa.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Estou com muito calor neste ônibus. | I’m really hot on this bus. |
| Você está com frio? Posso fechar a janela. | Are you cold? I can close the window. |
| As crianças estão com sede depois do jogo. | The children are thirsty after the game. |
Reserve quente for temperature or a lasting description
Quente is an adjective meaning hot or warm. Use it for food, drinks, weather, or an object: café quente, água quente, um dia quente. With a person, sou quente can sound like a permanent trait or carry a sensual interpretation, so it is not the ordinary translation of ‘I feel hot.’
For weather, say está quente or está fazendo calor. The first describes conditions; the second is an impersonal weather expression. Keep the person’s physical feeling separate: estou com calor.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O café ainda está quente. | The coffee is still hot. |
| Hoje está fazendo muito calor. | It’s very hot today. |
| Esse cobertor é quente, mas estou com frio. | That blanket is warm, but I’m cold. |
Remember: Say estou com calor to describe feeling hot. Use quente for the temperature of something and está fazendo calor or está quente to describe hot weather.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Say estou com calor to describe feeling hot. Use quente for the temperature of something and está fazendo calor or está quente to describe hot weather.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
