Eu Também vs. Eu Também Não: Agree with a Portuguese Statement — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Match a positive statement with eu também
When someone says that they like, need, or do something and you feel the same way, eu também means ‘me too.’ The verb can be omitted when the context is obvious, or repeated for emphasis.
In a complete reply, use the same tense and verb that the conversation calls for. The phrase também means ‘also/too’; it does not itself carry the verb’s meaning.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Gosto muito de café. — Eu também. | I really like coffee. — Me too. |
| Preciso sair cedo. — Eu também preciso. | I need to leave early. — I do too. |
| A gente já conhece esse lugar. — Nós também. | We already know this place. — We do too. |
Match a negative statement with a negative response
If the first person makes a negative statement, eu também não or nem eu can show that you share it: não gosto de café (I don’t like coffee) — eu também não (neither do I).
Use nem eu as a short, natural reply to a negative statement about yourself. With other subjects, repeat the subject or use the matching person: ele também não (he doesn’t either).
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Não conheço ninguém aqui. — Eu também não. | I don’t know anyone here. — Neither do I. |
| Ela ainda não chegou. — Ele também não. | She hasn’t arrived yet. — He hasn’t either. |
| Nunca fui a Salvador. — Nem eu. | I’ve never been to Salvador. — Neither have I. |
Remember: Listen for the polarity first: eu também agrees with a positive statement; eu também não and nem eu commonly agree with a negative one.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Listen for the polarity first: eu também agrees with a positive statement; eu também não and nem eu commonly agree with a negative one.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
