Eventually vs. Eventualmente: Avoid This Portuguese False Friend — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
What eventualmente usually means in Brazilian Portuguese
The English adverb eventually usually points to a result that happens after some time. Portuguese eventualmente more often means occasionally or possibly, depending on context. This overlap can lead an English speaker to predict the wrong timeline.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Eventualmente, trabalho de casa quando preciso me concentrar. | I occasionally work from home when I need to concentrate. |
| A reunião pode ser cancelada, eventualmente. | The meeting may possibly be cancelled. |
Say ‘eventually’ when you mean ‘in the end’
For a final result after delay, try no fim, por fim, or finalmente. Use mais cedo ou mais tarde for “sooner or later.” The best choice depends on whether you mean the last step of a process or that something will happen at some point.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Depois de várias tentativas, finalmente consegui entrar. | After several attempts, I eventually managed to get in. |
| Mais cedo ou mais tarde, vamos precisar conversar. | Eventually, we’ll need to talk. |
Use the timeline as a quick check
Ask yourself whether the sentence means “sometimes” or “after a delay.” If it means sometimes, eventualmente may fit. If it describes the outcome after waiting, use finalmente or por fim. Read the whole sentence rather than choosing by spelling alone.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Ele eventualmente visita os pais no meio da semana. | He occasionally visits his parents during the week. |
| Eles discutiram várias opções e, no fim, escolheram a mais simples. | They discussed several options and eventually chose the simplest one. |
Remember: Translate the intended timeline, not the similar-looking word: eventually often maps to finalmente or no fim.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Translate the intended timeline, not the similar-looking word: eventually often maps to finalmente or no fim.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
