Ganhar vs. Vencer in Portuguese: Win a Prize or Win a Match — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use ganhar for a prize, reward, or result you receive
Ganhar often focuses on receiving or obtaining something as the result of an event: a prize, a match, money, or an opportunity. It can also mean to earn, as in ganhar dinheiro (earn money). Learn the meaning from the object that follows the verb.
For competitions, ganhar can describe the team or person that comes away with the win.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Ela ganhou um prêmio no concurso. | She won a prize in the contest. |
| O time ganhou o jogo por dois a zero. | The team won the game two to zero. |
| Ele ganha a vida como fotógrafo. | He earns a living as a photographer. |
Use vencer to emphasize overcoming an opponent or challenge
Vencer often puts the focus on defeating an opponent, overcoming a challenge, or prevailing. You may hear vencer uma equipe, vencer uma disputa, or vencer uma dificuldade. It is also used for winning an election or competition.
Ganhar and vencer can both describe winning a game, but vencer can make the idea of the contest or opponent more prominent. In everyday speech, choose the verb that fits the phrase you already know.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O Brasil venceu a equipe visitante. | Brazil defeated the visiting team. |
| Ela venceu o medo de falar em público. | She overcame her fear of public speaking. |
| Quem venceu a eleição? | Who won the election? |
Remember: Ganhar often foregrounds the prize, earnings, or win you receive; vencer often foregrounds defeating or overcoming something. The verbs overlap in competition contexts.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ganhar often foregrounds the prize, earnings, or win you receive; vencer often foregrounds defeating or overcoming something. The verbs overlap in competition contexts.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
