How to Give Your Location in Portuguese During an Emergency — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Say the street, number, and neighborhood in order
A useful location message names the city, street, number, and neighborhood. Brazilian street addresses normally put the street name before the number in speech: Rua das Palmeiras, número 40.
Say one part at a time and pause. If you have a building name or apartment number, add it after the street address.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Estou na Rua das Palmeiras, número 40, no bairro Centro. | I am at 40 Rua das Palmeiras, in the Centro neighborhood. |
| É o apartamento 302, no terceiro andar. | It is apartment 302, on the third floor. |
Use landmarks when an address is not enough
A landmark can make a location easier to find: a station, school, large store, public square, or distinctive entrance. Use perto de (near), em frente a (in front of), and ao lado de (next to) to describe the relationship.
Avoid saying only aqui (here) if you are speaking by phone. The other person cannot see your surroundings.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Estou em frente ao posto de gasolina, perto da ponte. | I am in front of the gas station, near the bridge. |
| A entrada fica ao lado da farmácia. | The entrance is next to the pharmacy. |
Spell or repeat details carefully
If the listener asks you to repeat a street name, slow down and spell it. For a number, separate the digits or repeat the complete number. You can share a live map pin when the other person can receive it securely.
If you are unsure of the address, say so and describe a visible sign or landmark rather than inventing a number.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O nome da rua é B-A-R-Ã-O, Barão. | The street name is B-A-R-Ã-O, Barão. |
| Não sei o número, mas estou perto da Praça da Matriz. | I don't know the number, but I am near Praça da Matriz. |
Remember: Give a street address in short parts, then add a landmark, entrance, or floor to make the location easier to confirm.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.
I am at 40 Rua das Palmeiras, in the Centro neighborhood.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Give a street address in short parts, then add a landmark, entrance, or floor to make the location easier to confirm.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
