    Ask whether you can join

A casual soccer game can begin with a simple question. Use futebol for soccer and pelada for an informal pickup game in many Brazilian contexts. The word is colloquial, so futebol is a neutral choice when you are unsure.

Ask whether there is room and whether teams have already been formed. You do not need to claim experience; say you are learning the game or ask what level the group is playing.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask whether you can join
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Tem vaga para mais um?Is there room for one more?
Posso jogar com vocês?Can I play with you all?

Find out the teams and position

Time means team, jogador or jogadora is a player, and posição is position. Ask who you are playing with and where the group would like you to play. In a casual game, positions may change as people arrive.

If you do not know a player's name, ask what color your team is wearing or which side you are on.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Find out the teams and position
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
    Qual é o meu time?Which team am I on?
Onde vocês querem que eu jogue?Where would you like me to play?

    Keep the play moving

Short calls are easier to hear across a field. Use passa or toca when asking a teammate to pass the ball, and aqui to get their attention when you are open. Listen to the players around you to understand the group's usual wording.

If you miss a rule, ask between plays. A group may use its own informal rules, so check how goals, boundaries, and substitutions work before assuming.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Keep the play moving

Remember: Ask to join, confirm your team and position, and check the group's rules when the game pauses.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Ask to join, confirm your team and position, and check the group's rules when the game pauses.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
