Mais Cedo vs. Cedo Demais in Portuguese: Earlier or Too Early — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use mais cedo to compare two times
Mais cedo means “earlier.” It compares one time with another, either stated directly or understood from the conversation.
You can use the same pattern with adjectives and adverbs: mais tarde (later), mais rápido (faster), and mais devagar (more slowly).
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Amanhã vou sair mais cedo. | Tomorrow I’m going to leave earlier. |
| Você pode chegar mais cedo para ajudar? | Can you arrive earlier to help? |
| O ônibus de hoje chegou mais cedo que o de ontem. | Today’s bus arrived earlier than yesterday’s. |
Use cedo demais to say “too early”
Cedo demais means “too early.” Demais adds the sense that the time is excessive or does not work for the speaker; it is not just a comparison with another time.
Place demais after the word it intensifies: cedo demais, tarde demais, caro demais. The phrase often explains why a plan is difficult or needs changing.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Seis da manhã é cedo demais para mim. | Six in the morning is too early for me. |
| Ainda é cedo demais para decidir. | It’s still too early to decide. |
| A gente marcou cedo demais e o café ainda estava fechado. | We scheduled it too early, and the café was still closed. |
Add a reference point to make the meaning clear
Mais cedo answers “earlier than what?” when a comparison matters. Cedo demais answers “too early for what?” and often refers to a practical limit or personal preference.
You can combine the ideas: chegar mais cedo pode ser melhor, mas chegar cedo demais talvez não funcione. The first phrase compares; the second evaluates the timing.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vamos sair mais cedo do que ontem. | Let’s leave earlier than yesterday. |
| Não precisa chegar cedo demais; a porta abre às nove. | You don’t need to arrive too early; the door opens at nine. |
| A reunião terminou mais cedo, mas não cedo demais para pegar o ônibus. | The meeting ended earlier, but not too early to catch the bus. |
Remember: Use mais cedo for “earlier” in a comparison and cedo demais for “too early” when the time is unsuitable or excessive.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use mais cedo for “earlier” in a comparison and cedo demais for “too early” when the time is unsuitable or excessive.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
