How to Say ‘Make Friends’ in Portuguese: Fazer Amizade — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use fazer amizade to describe becoming friends
Fazer amizade means to make or form a friendship. It is often followed by com and the person or group you become friends with.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Fiz amizade com uma colega no curso. | I made friends with a classmate in the course. |
| É fácil fazer amizade com pessoas que gostam dos mesmos assuntos. | It’s easy to make friends with people who like the same topics. |
Use fazer novos amigos for meeting people
Fazer novos amigos is a straightforward way to say “make new friends.” Conhecer pessoas means to meet people; it does not necessarily mean you have already become friends.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quero fazer novos amigos quando me mudar. | I want to make new friends when I move. |
| Conheci muita gente no evento. | I met a lot of people at the event. |
Talk about how a friendship began
To explain how you became friends, use começar a conversar (start talking) or se conhecer (meet one another). Keep the story in the past if you are describing a friendship that began at a particular event.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A gente começou a conversar durante a aula. | We started talking during class. |
| Nos conhecemos por meio de amigos em comum. | We met through mutual friends. |
Remember: Fazer amizade describes forming a friendship; conhecer pessoas describes meeting people.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Fazer amizade describes forming a friendship; conhecer pessoas describes meeting people.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
