Mensagem vs. Recado: Leave a Message in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use mensagem for a message in any format
Mensagem is the general word for a message, including a text, voice note, or written communication. The context can specify the format: mensagem de texto or mensagem de voz.
Use it when you mean the communication itself. Brazilian speakers use mensagem for digital messages as well as other written communication.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Recebi sua mensagem ontem à noite. | I got your message last night. |
| Vou mandar uma mensagem quando chegar. | I’ll send a message when I arrive. |
| Ela deixou uma mensagem de voz. | She left a voice message. |
Use recado for a short note or information to pass on
Recado often means a brief message, reminder, or information for someone who is not available. Deixar um recado means leave a message; dar um recado means pass along a message or instruction.
A recado may be spoken or written. The word often focuses on the practical information being passed along rather than the communication channel.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Pode dar um recado para a Ana? | Can you pass a message to Ana? |
| Deixei um recado na mesa da recepção. | I left a note at the reception desk. |
| Meu chefe pediu para avisar: esse é o recado. | My boss asked me to let you know; that’s the message. |
Remember: Mensagem is a broad word for a message. Recado often suggests a short note, reminder, or information passed along, though the meanings overlap.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Mensagem is a broad word for a message. Recado often suggests a short note, reminder, or information passed along, though the meanings overlap.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
