Translate Any and Anyone in Negative Portuguese Sentences — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Translate the whole negative message
English often uses anything or anyone after a negative verb. Brazilian Portuguese commonly uses não before the verb and nada or ninguém afterward: não comprei nada, não conheço ninguém. The two negative elements work together; they do not turn the statement positive.
This is why translating anyone mechanically as alguém can change the intended meaning. First decide whether the whole sentence denies that a thing exists or that a person was involved. Then choose the Portuguese negative pattern that carries that message. The examples here practice completed actions and present knowledge.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Não comprei nada. | I didn’t buy anything. |
| Não conheço ninguém aqui. | I don’t know anyone here. |
| Ela não encontrou nada na bolsa. | She didn’t find anything in her bag. |
Notice when the negative word moves to the front
When ninguém or nada appears before the verb, the sentence can be negative without an additional não: ninguém respondeu, nada mudou. Compare that with não vi ninguém, where ninguém follows the verb. Word position matters, so do not add or remove não based only on an English word count.
Say an English prompt aloud, pause, and build the Portuguese message from the negative meaning. After checking the example, underline the part that denies the action and the word for the person or thing. Use another familiar verb to create one more sentence with the same placement pattern.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Ninguém respondeu à mensagem. | Nobody replied to the message. |
| Não vi ninguém na recepção. | I didn’t see anyone at reception. |
| Nada mudou desde ontem. | Nothing has changed since yesterday. |
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
