Pagar Mico: Talk About an Embarrassing Moment in Brazil — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use pagar mico for an awkward public moment
Pagar mico is an informal Brazilian expression for embarrassing yourself or ending up in a silly, awkward situation. It often describes a small social mishap rather than a serious humiliation. The literal words are not the meaning to remember.
The common patterns are pagar mico and pagar o maior mico (make a big fool of yourself). The past tense is paguei, pagou, or pagaram, depending on the subject.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Paguei mico quando chamei o professor pelo nome errado. | I embarrassed myself when I called the teacher by the wrong name. |
| Ele pagou o maior mico no karaokê, mas todo mundo riu junto. | He made a fool of himself at karaoke, but everyone laughed along. |
| Não quero pagar mico na apresentação. | I don’t want to embarrass myself during the presentation. |
Compare paying mico with feeling sem graça
Pagar mico describes the embarrassing event or action. Ficar sem graça describes the person’s uncomfortable feeling. A person can pagar mico and then ficar sem graça, but the phrases describe different parts of the moment.
The expression is casual and may sound playful when you are talking about your own mistake. Avoid using it to mock someone who is genuinely upset about a sensitive situation.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Paguei mico no restaurante e depois fiquei sem graça. | I embarrassed myself at the restaurant and then felt awkward. |
| Ela ficou sem graça com o elogio. | She felt awkward about the compliment. |
| Foi só um engano; não precisa transformar isso num problema. | It was just a mistake; there’s no need to turn it into a problem. |
Remember: Use pagar mico for the embarrassing moment or action; use ficar sem graça for the uncomfortable feeling that may follow.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use pagar mico for the embarrassing moment or action; use ficar sem graça for the uncomfortable feeling that may follow.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
