Pasta in Portuguese: Folder, Paste, or the Food ‘Pasta’ — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Pasta can mean a folder or a paste
In Portuguese, pasta can refer to a folder for papers or digital files. It also appears in compounds such as pasta de dente (toothpaste) and pasta de amendoim (peanut butter). Context tells you which meaning is intended.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Salvei o documento na pasta de trabalho. | I saved the document in the work folder. |
| Preciso comprar pasta de dente. | I need to buy toothpaste. |
Say macarrão for the food category
For Italian-style pasta dishes, Brazilian Portuguese usually uses macarrão or the name of the specific dish. Ask whether the restaurant has macarrão, lasanha, or nhoque rather than saying pasta and expecting the English food meaning.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Hoje tem macarrão com molho de tomate? | Do you have pasta with tomato sauce today? |
| Eu queria uma porção de lasanha. | I’d like a serving of lasagna. |
Add a clue when the context might be unclear
If you are talking about computers, say pasta de arquivos or pasta no computador. If you are ordering food, name macarrão or a dish. The extra noun helps listeners understand which use of pasta you mean.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Onde está a pasta com os arquivos do projeto? | Where is the folder with the project files? |
| Qual prato de macarrão vocês recomendam? | Which pasta dish do you recommend? |
Remember: Use pasta for folders or certain spreads; use macarrão for the food category.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use pasta for folders or certain spreads; use macarrão for the food category.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
