Qual palavra não ficou clara? means “Which word wasn’t clear?” You can also ask Foi o nome do lugar ou o horário? — “Was it the place name or the time?” This gives the listener two relevant possibilities instead of asking them to evaluate your whole level.
Bruno’s speaking-habits episode encourages working toward clear pronunciation without requiring the erasure of a foreign accent. The repair routine here is an original extension of that principle. It does not assess your proficiency or claim that every misunderstanding comes from pronunciation.
Separate sound, vocabulary and the message
A listener might not know the word you chose, might not hear it over noise, or might find the whole sentence ambiguous. Ask Você não ouviu ou não entendeu o que eu quis dizer? — “Did you not hear, or did you not understand what I meant?”
If the word itself is unclear, try Como você diria essa palavra? — “How would you say this word?” Listen to the model, then repeat the word in your complete phrase. If the meaning is unclear, explain it with simpler language. Repeating the same sound more loudly will not resolve a different problem.
A repair that returns to the message
You: A gente se encontra no museu às duas. — We’ll meet at the museum at two.
Friend: Não entendi a última parte. — I didn’t understand the last part.
You: O horário? Eu disse às duas da tarde. — The time? I said two in the afternoon.
Friend: Agora entendi. — Now I understand.
The second version adds context and clarifies the target. It does not require a diagnosis of one vowel. In another exchange, your partner may identify a particular sound; work on that word and check it in context. The listener’s understanding of the final message is the immediate goal.
Practice asking for actionable feedback
- You hear “I didn’t understand.” Ask which word was unclear.
- The listener understood each word but not your point. Should you ask only for a pronunciation model?
- You repeat a corrected word in a sentence. Ask whether the full sentence is now clear.
Show answers and explanations
- Qual palavra não ficou clara?
- No. Try Vou explicar de outro jeito. — I’ll explain it another way. The problem is meaning rather than an identified sound.
- Assim ficou mais claro? — Is it clearer this way?
For practice, choose one short sentence with a place and a time. Have a partner identify the detail they heard rather than rate your accent. If they report the wrong detail, isolate that part, retry it and return to the complete sentence. A quiet room and familiar vocabulary help keep the task focused.

Use native Brazilian audio in Real Life Portuguese as a model for a phrase you need. Practice a short section, then say the full phrase with a new detail. Bring a recurring difficulty to a teacher rather than expecting a friend to diagnose every sound.

Frequently asked questions
Does not being understood mean my accent is bad?
No. Noise, unfamiliar vocabulary, ambiguity and missing context can also cause misunderstanding. Identify the unclear part first.
Should I repeat only the corrected word?
You can practice the word briefly, but put it back into the full phrase and check whether the listener understands the message.
