Build many adverbs from an adjective

A common way to form an adverb is to add -mente to the feminine singular form of an adjective: rápida becomes rapidamente (quickly), cuidadosa becomes cuidadosamente (carefully), and tranquila becomes tranquilamente (calmly). If the adjective has the same form for masculine and feminine, attach -mente to that form: felizmente (fortunately).

The resulting adverb does not agree in gender or number with the noun. It describes how an action happens or comments on a whole idea, while the adjective still agrees with the noun it describes.

    Ela respondeu rapidamente.She answered quickly.
Leia as instruções cuidadosamente.Read the instructions carefully.
Felizmente, encontramos uma solução.Fortunately, we found a solution.

Place the adverb near the idea it modifies

Adverbs can appear after the verb or at the beginning of a sentence. Put the word where the meaning is easiest to follow: ela explicou claramente (she explained clearly) or claramente, precisamos rever o plano (clearly, we need to review the plan).

Not every English adverb ending in -ly maps to a Portuguese -mente word, and everyday Brazilian conversation often uses shorter alternatives. Treat the pattern as a useful vocabulary tool, then learn frequent expressions in context.

O ônibus chegou pontualmente. The bus arrived on time.
Ele explicou o problema gentilmente. He explained the problem kindly.
Normalmente, estudo depois do trabalho.I usually study after work.

Remember: For many adjectives, use the feminine singular form plus -mente. The adverb itself does not change to agree with a noun, and context determines the most natural word choice.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

For many adjectives, use the feminine singular form plus -mente. The adverb itself does not change to agree with a noun, and context determines the most natural word choice.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
