At the Airport in Brazil: Check-In, Bags, and Boarding in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Start check-in with your booking or passport
At the airline counter, say that you are checking in and show the documents requested by the attendant. A passagem is a ticket, a reserva is a booking, and o documento can refer to the identification they ask you to present. Let staff direct you to the next step if the process is unfamiliar.
If you have a bag to check, ask whether it should go on the scale. A mala de mão is carry-on luggage; bagagem despachada is checked baggage. Confirm the baggage allowance with the airline rather than assuming every ticket includes the same amount.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Estou fazendo o check-in para este voo. | I’m checking in for this flight. |
| Onde devo colocar a mala? | Where should I put the suitcase? |
| Esta bagagem vai até o destino final? | Does this bag go to the final destination? |
Confirm the gate and boarding time
After check-in, look at the information displayed for your flight and ask for help if the gate or time is unclear. Portão is a gate, embarque is boarding, and horário can mean the scheduled time. Listen for a gate change and recheck the airport display.
When you need someone to repeat information, ask them to say the number or letter slowly. Repeat it back to confirm. This simple repair strategy is useful for gate numbers, seat numbers, and other details that are easy to mishear in a busy terminal.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual é o portão de embarque? | Which is the boarding gate? |
| Que horas começa o embarque? | What time does boarding begin? |
| Pode repetir o número do portão, por favor? | Could you repeat the gate number, please? |
Remember: Use check-in, luggage, gate, and boarding phrases to ask clear questions. Follow the airline and airport staff for current flight instructions.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use check-in, luggage, gate, and boarding phrases to ask clear questions. Follow the airline and airport staff for current flight instructions.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
