Além Disso vs. Além do Mais: Add a Point in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use além disso to add supporting information
Além disso means in addition, besides, or furthermore. Use it when the next sentence gives another reason, fact, or detail that supports the same point.
It commonly begins a sentence and is followed by a comma. You can also put it after the subject for emphasis.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O bairro tem boas escolas. Além disso, fica perto do metrô. | The neighborhood has good schools. In addition, it is close to the subway. |
| Além disso, precisamos confirmar o horário antes de sair. | Besides, we need to confirm the time before leaving. |
Use além do mais to add a reinforcing point
Além do mais also adds information and can sound like what is more. It often introduces a point that strengthens the speaker's position or adds extra weight to what came before.
The difference is usually one of emphasis and flow, not a strict grammar rule. In many contexts, the two expressions can replace each other.

|---|---|
| A casa precisa de reforma. Além do mais, fica longe do meu trabalho. | The house needs repairs. What's more, it is far from my work. |
| Não quero cancelar. Além do mais, já confirmei com todos. | I don't want to cancel. Besides, I have already confirmed with everyone. |
Connect ideas without repeating the same transition
Use one connector where it helps the reader see the relationship. If every sentence begins with além disso, the writing can feel like a list. You can also connect ideas through a pronoun, a repeated key word, or a clear topic sentence.
In casual speech, e (and) or também (also) may be simpler. Choose the connector that matches how formal and structured your explanation needs to be.

| O curso tem aulas práticas e também oferece orientação individual. | The course has practical classes and also offers individual guidance. |
| A proposta reduz custos. Além disso, simplifica o processo para a equipe. | The proposal reduces costs. In addition, it simplifies the process for the team. |
Remember: Use além disso for another supporting point and além do mais when you want the extra point to reinforce your argument.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.
The neighborhood has good schools. In addition, it is close to the subway.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use além disso for another supporting point and além do mais when you want the extra point to reinforce your argument.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
