At a Brazilian Mechanic: Explain a Car Problem in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Describe the symptom and when it happens
Use estou ouvindo um barulho (I’m hearing a noise) or o carro está fazendo um barulho (the car is making a noise). Add when you notice it: ao frear (when braking), ao virar (when turning), or ao ligar (when starting).
Describe what you observed rather than naming a diagnosis. A mechanic can inspect the car and explain what the problem might be.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O carro faz um barulho quando eu freio. | The car makes a noise when I brake. |
| Esta luz acende depois de alguns minutos. | This light comes on after a few minutes. |
| O ar-condicionado parou de funcionar ontem. | The air conditioning stopped working yesterday. |
Ask for an explanation and an estimate
Ask what should be checked first and whether the shop can give an estimate before doing the repair. If you need time to decide, say vou pensar e retorno (I’ll think about it and get back to you).
Repeat the expected work and timing in your own words to confirm what you understood. Ask which details are estimates and which have been confirmed.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você pode verificar de onde vem o barulho? | Can you check where the noise is coming from? |
| Pode me explicar o orçamento antes do conserto? | Could you explain the estimate before the repair? |
| Quanto tempo o serviço deve levar? | How long should the service take? |
Remember: Explain what you noticed and when it happens; let the mechanic assess the cause and clarify the estimate and repair plan.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Explain what you noticed and when it happens; let the mechanic assess the cause and clarify the estimate and repair plan.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
