At a Toy Store in Brazil: Ask for a Gift by Age and Interest — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Describe the age and interests
Brinquedo means toy, jogo means game, and livro infantil is a children's book. Say the child's age and one interest to help the staff narrow the options: gosta de desenhar (likes drawing) or gosta de dinossauros (likes dinosaurs).
Use this as a description of the recipient, not as a claim that a product is suitable. Check the package and ask staff about the current age guidance.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Estou procurando um presente para uma criança de seis anos. | I'm looking for a gift for a six-year-old. |
| Ela gosta de música e de pintar. | She likes music and painting. |
Ask what's included and how the game works
Ask Quantas peças vêm na caixa? (How many pieces come in the box?) and O jogo é para quantas pessoas? (How many people is the game for?). These questions help you compare packages without guessing.
If you are choosing a book, ask whether the story is available in another language or whether the edition is illustrated.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Este jogo é para jogar sozinho ou em grupo? | Is this game for one person or a group? |
| O livro tem ilustrações? | Does the book have illustrations? |
Confirm the price and gift options
Use embrulhar para presente to ask for gift wrapping. Policies and availability vary by store, so check before paying. If you need a receipt for an exchange, ask which type the store can provide.
Repeat the item and total price at checkout. This offers one more chance to confirm you have the right product.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vocês embrulham para presente? | Do you wrap gifts? |
| Pode me dar um comprovante da compra? | Can you give me proof of purchase? |
Remember: Describe the child's age and interests, ask what comes in the package, then check current age guidance and gift options with the store.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.
I'm looking for a gift for a six-year-old.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Describe the child's age and interests, ask what comes in the package, then check current age guidance and gift options with the store.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
