Ask for the service you actually need

At a lavanderia in Brazil, start with “Vocês lavam e secam roupas?” (Do you wash and dry clothes?). Ask how the service is priced and when your clothes will be ready. A lavanderia may be self-service or staff-operated; check rather than assuming how it works.

Useful verbs are lavar (wash), secar (dry), passar (iron) and retirar or buscar (collect). “Lavar e passar” does not automatically include drying as a separately priced service; ask what is included.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask for the service you actually need
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
    É autosserviço?Is it self-service?
Vocês lavam e secam roupas?Do you wash and dry clothes?
    Passar está incluído?Is ironing included?

Confirm the price before handing things over

Ask whether the price is por quilo (per kilogram), por peça (per item) or por máquina (per machine/load). “Quanto fica?” asks the total for your situation, while “Quanto custa?” asks the price. Pointing to the item or explaining the amount makes the answer more useful.

Numbers in the practice dialogue are invented examples, not current local prices. Repeat the quoted total back if you are unsure.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Confirm the price before handing things over
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
O preço é por quilo ou por peça?Is the price per kilogram or per item?
Quanto fica para lavar e secar estas roupas? How much is it to wash and dry these clothes?
Esse é o valor total? Is that the total price?

Give one clear instruction and confirm collection

Use “Esta peça não pode ir na secadora” when a garment cannot be tumble-dried. Follow the garment label and ask staff to confirm whether their service suits it. “Pode separar as roupas brancas?” asks about separating whites.

Para quando fica pronto? asks when the order will be ready. A partir das seis means from six onward, not necessarily exactly at six. Ask about opening hours if you plan to collect later.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Give one clear instruction and confirm collection
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Esta peça não pode ir na secadora. This item cannot go in the dryer.
Pode separar as roupas brancas? Can you separate the white clothes?
Para quando fica pronto? When will it be ready?
Até que horas vocês ficam abertos?Until what time are you open?

    A complete laundry-counter conversation

This original fictional dialogue practices a staff-operated service. Swap the clothes for one jacket or a duvet and ask whether the pricing changes.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: A complete laundry-counter conversation
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Cliente: Bom dia. Vocês lavam e secam estas roupas?Customer: Good morning. Do you wash and dry these clothes?
Atendente: Sim. Cobramos por quilo.Staff: Yes. We charge per kilogram.
Cliente: Pode me dizer o valor total antes?Customer: Can you tell me the total price first?
Atendente: Claro. Fica quarenta reais.Staff: Of course. It comes to forty reais.
Cliente: Certo. Esta peça não pode ir na secadora.Customer: Okay. This item cannot go in the dryer.
Atendente: Entendi. Fica pronto amanhã, a partir das seis da tarde.Staff: Understood. It will be ready tomorrow, from six in the evening.
Cliente: Então posso buscar amanhã depois das seis?Customer: So I can collect it tomorrow after six?
Atendente: Pode, sim. Guarde este comprovante.Staff: Yes, you can. Keep this receipt.

    At a self-service machine

If you operate the machine yourself, you may need to ask where to put the detergent and how to start a cycle. Do not guess unfamiliar controls from the English translation alone: ask staff or read the machine’s instructions.

Before leaving, check that you have the receipt and know the collection time. Practice repeating a price and time back; this is more useful than memorizing a long vocabulary list.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: At a self-service machine
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Onde coloco o sabão?Where do I put the detergent?
Qual programa devo escolher?Which cycle should I choose?
Como faço para começar?How do I start?

Remember: Explain the service, ask the total, give one care instruction and repeat the collection time back. Try it without reading the English.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

    É autosserviço?

Context: Ask for the service you actually need

    Vocês lavam e secam roupas?

Context: Ask for the service you actually need

    Passar está incluído?

Context: Ask for the service you actually need

O preço é por quilo ou por peça?

Context: Confirm the price before handing things over

Choose the language for the situation

Now use the explanation to decide what fits the situation. Check the reason for the answer, not just the option you chose.

The staff says Cobramos por quilo. How is the price calculated?
Which phrase says a garment cannot go in the dryer?
Your clothes are ready amanhã, a partir das seis da tarde. When can you collect them?

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Explain the service, ask the total, give one care instruction and repeat the collection time back. Try it without reading the English.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
