Ask which option the person prefers

Qual means “which” or “what” when you are choosing from a known set. Use qual você prefere? for a general choice, or qual dos dois? when the two options are already clear.

If the options are nouns, make qual agree in number: qual horário? (which time?) and quais dias? (which days?). The form does not change for masculine and feminine nouns.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask which option the person prefers
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Qual horário funciona melhor para você?Which time works better for you?
Qual dos dois restaurantes você prefere?Which of the two restaurants do you prefer?
Quais dias são mais tranquilos?Which days are quieter?

Say when either choice is acceptable

Tanto faz means that either option is fine, but it can sound indifferent if said without context. Add para mim or explain your preference to make the answer easier to interpret.

If both options work but one is slightly better, say prefiro… mas… (I prefer… but…). That gives the other person flexibility without hiding your preference.

Para mim, tanto faz; os dois horários funcionam.Either is fine for me; both times work.
Prefiro sábado, mas domingo também dá.I prefer Saturday, but Sunday works too.

Remember: Use qual to ask which option, quais for plural choices, and tanto faz only when you really mean that either one works.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Use qual to ask which option, quais for plural choices, and tanto faz only when you really mean that either one works.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
