Talk About Art in Portuguese: Ask an Artist About Their Work — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask about the idea behind the work
Start with what inspired a painting or photograph. A obra is a work of art, and inspiração is inspiration.
Questions about the artist’s intention are often more open and respectful than assuming what a particular symbol means.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O que inspirou esta obra? | What inspired this work? |
| Como você escolheu as cores? | How did you choose the colors? |
| O que você queria mostrar nesta fotografia? | What did you want to show in this photograph? |
Ask about materials and process
Ask which materials the artist used or how long the project took. These questions invite an explanation without requiring you to know specialist vocabulary.
If you do not recognize a technique, ask what it is called or request a simple explanation.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Que materiais você usou? | What materials did you use? |
| Quanto tempo levou para terminar? | How long did it take to finish? |
| Como se chama essa técnica? | What is this technique called? |
Share your reaction and ask a follow-up
You can describe a color, mood, or detail that caught your attention before asking another question. A specific observation makes your response more natural.
For vocabulary for visiting a museum, see our guide to asking about exhibits and visitor information.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Gostei do contraste entre as cores. | I like the contrast between the colors. |
| A imagem me deixou curioso. | The image made me curious. |
| Você está trabalhando em outro projeto? | Are you working on another project? |
Remember: Prepare one question about inspiration, one about process, and one observation about a detail you notice.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Prepare one question about inspiration, one about process, and one observation about a detail you notice.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
