Recycling and Trash in Brazil: Ask Where to Put Each Item — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Learn the basic words for household waste
Lixo means garbage or trash. Reciclagem is recycling, and coleta de lixo is trash collection. You may see separate containers marked papel, plástico, metal, and vidro, but local systems differ, so ask which materials your building or neighborhood accepts.
The verb separar means to separate or sort. Coleta seletiva refers to selective recycling collection. Do not assume the same schedule or sorting rules apply everywhere in Brazil.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Tem coleta seletiva neste prédio? | Is there recycling collection in this building? |
| Onde devo colocar o vidro? | Where should I put the glass? |
| Que dia passa a coleta de lixo? | What day does trash collection come? |
Check local instructions before sorting
A síndica or síndico may be the building manager; the porteiro or zelador may also know where residents should leave bags. Ask for instructions instead of leaving items in an unmarked area.
For large objects, such as furniture or electronics, ask about descarte (disposal) or a collection point. These items may follow a different process from ordinary household trash.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Onde ficam os contêineres de reciclagem? | Where are the recycling containers? |
| Como faço o descarte de um aparelho eletrônico? | How do I dispose of an electronic device? |
| Preciso separar o lixo orgânico? | Do I need to separate organic waste? |
Remember: Use lixo, reciclagem, coleta seletiva, and descarte to ask about waste. Follow the local building or city guidance because accepted materials and pickup schedules vary.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use lixo, reciclagem, coleta seletiva, and descarte to ask about waste. Follow the local building or city guidance because accepted materials and pickup schedules vary.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
