Painting in Portuguese: Colors, Brushes, and Workshop Questions — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Name the painting supplies
Tinta is paint, pincel is brush, tela is canvas, and paleta is palette. An easel is cavalete. Put the article with each word in your notes: a tinta, o pincel, a tela, a paleta, o cavalete.
When you are uncertain which supply to choose, identify the surface and the kind of paint you are using. The instructor can then recommend a compatible material.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Onde está a paleta de tinta? | Where is the paint palette? |
| Este pincel serve para detalhes? | Is this brush suitable for details? |
Ask for help mixing and choosing colors
Misturar cores means to mix colors. Claro and escuro mean light and dark; mais claro means lighter, and mais escuro means darker. Ask how to reach a shade rather than trying to guess the color mixture from a single word.
Adjectives usually agree with the noun: uma cor escura, um tom escuro. Tom means shade or tone and is masculine.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Como faço um tom mais claro? | How do I make a lighter shade? |
| Posso misturar azul com branco? | Can I mix blue with white? |
| Esta cor ficou diferente do que eu queria. | This color turned out different from what I wanted. |
Describe your painting and invite feedback
Use primeiro, depois, and por fim to explain the steps you took. To ask for feedback, say O que você acha desta parte? (What do you think of this part?) and point to the area you mean.
A painting class may use materials with different drying times and cleanup instructions. Ask the teacher how to care for your brushes and work surface before leaving.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Primeiro, fiz o fundo; depois, pintei as árvores. | First, I painted the background; then, I painted the trees. |
| Como devo limpar este pincel? | How should I clean this brush? |
Remember: Practice the supply nouns and color adjectives, then use a specific question to get help with a technique or part of your painting.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Practice the supply nouns and color adjectives, then use a specific question to get help with a technique or part of your painting.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
