How to Ask for and Repeat a Phone Number in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask for a number and clarify which one you need
Qual é o seu telefone? is a general way to ask for someone’s phone number. In a service situation, you might hear telefone para contato (contact number) or celular (mobile phone). If the reason matters, say so: preciso do seu número para enviar a confirmação (I need your number to send the confirmation).
Brazilian phone numbers are commonly shared with an area code, called DDD. Rather than trying to memorize every possible format, ask the person to include the DDD and follow the grouping they use when they say the digits.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você pode me passar seu número com o DDD? | Could you give me your number with the area code? |
| Esse é o seu celular ou telefone do trabalho? | Is that your mobile number or work number? |
| Qual número posso usar para confirmar a reserva? | Which number can I use to confirm the reservation? |
Repeat the digits back in short groups
Phone numbers are easier to verify when you repeat them in small chunks instead of one long string. Say the digits at a steady pace, then ask if you heard correctly: então, é…? (so, it’s…?). If you miss one, ask which group to repeat rather than requesting the entire number again.
The digit zero is zero; numbers from one to nine have familiar names. The speaker may group the digits differently from you, so focus on confirming the sequence rather than insisting on one universal rhythm.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vou repetir o número para confirmar. | I’ll repeat the number to confirm. |
| Pode repetir só os últimos quatro dígitos? | Could you repeat just the last four digits? |
| Anotei certo? | Did I write it down correctly? |
Remember: Ask for the number with its DDD, write it in the groups the speaker gives, and read it back at a calm pace to confirm every digit.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask for the number with its DDD, write it in the groups the speaker gives, and read it back at a calm pace to confirm every digit.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
