Use por acaso to say ‘by any chance’

Por acaso can mean ‘by any chance’ in a question and can also describe something that happened by chance. In everyday conversation, the question use is a handy way to ask about a possibility without assuming the answer.

Its exact tone depends on the sentence and intonation. A calm question may sound like a polite check; a strongly stressed or repeated question can sound surprised or doubtful. Pay attention to how the speaker says it, not only to the dictionary translation.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Use por acaso to say ‘by any chance’
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Você conhece a Ana por acaso?Do you happen to know Ana?
Você viu meu carregador por acaso?Have you seen my charger, by any chance?
Encontrei esse livro por acaso.I found this book by chance.

Separate a neutral check from a skeptical question

When you need something, use por acaso with a clear request and a friendly tone. When the phrase is part of a challenge—such as asking whether somebody did something they were not expected to do—it may sound skeptical. The surrounding conversation makes that difference clearer.

Por acaso is not the only way to ask politely. Você sabe…? (do you know…?) or você poderia…? (could you…?) may be more direct when you want a specific answer or action.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

In questions, por acaso often means ‘by any chance’ or ‘happen to.’ Intonation and context decide whether the question feels neutral or skeptical.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
