Quebrar um Galho: Ask for a Small Favor in Brazilian Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use the idiom for a helpful favor or workaround
Quebrar um galho is an informal Brazilian expression meaning to help someone out or make a practical temporary solution work. It can describe a favor a person does or an imperfect option that is useful in the moment.
The expression is conversational. Use it with friends, colleagues you know well, or in relaxed situations. For a formal request, say ajudar (help) and describe what you need instead of relying on an idiom the listener may not expect.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você pode quebrar um galho e me levar até o metrô? | Could you help me out and take me to the metro? |
| Esse carregador quebra um galho até eu comprar outro. | This charger works as a temporary fix until I buy another one. |
| Minha vizinha quebrou um galho para mim ontem. | My neighbor helped me out yesterday. |
Make the favor and its limits clear
When you ask someone to quebrar um galho, say exactly what the favor involves and when you need it. The idiom can sound friendly, but it does not make a large request automatically easy to accept. Give the other person room to say no.
For a more neutral request, use você pode me ajudar com…? (could you help me with…?) or será que dá para…? (do you think it would be possible to…?). These phrases explain the action without the idiomatic meaning.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você consegue quebrar um galho e buscar a encomenda hoje? | Could you help me out and pick up the package today? |
| Se não puder, tudo bem; eu peço um carro. | If you can’t, that’s okay; I’ll get a car. |
| Você pode me ajudar a carregar estas caixas? | Could you help me carry these boxes? |
Remember: Use quebrar um galho informally for a favor or temporary fix, then state clearly what help you need and by when.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use quebrar um galho informally for a favor or temporary fix, then state clearly what help you need and by when.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
