Qual vs. O Que in Portuguese: Ask ‘Which?’ or ‘What?’ — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use qual when you are choosing between options
Qual often means “which?” It points to a choice from a set, even when the options are not listed aloud. In conversation, the listener can usually infer the set from the context: a menu, a class schedule, or a group of people.
Qual changes to quais for a plural noun. The noun that follows often makes the choice explicit: qual livro (which book), quais dias (which days).
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual café você prefere? | Which coffee do you prefer? |
| Quais dias são melhores para você? | Which days work best for you? |
| Qual dessas camisas você quer provar? | Which of these shirts do you want to try on? |
Use o que for an open ‘what?’ question
O que usually asks for information, an explanation, or the name of something. The answer is not necessarily a selection from a known list. Learn o que as a question expression rather than translating each part separately.
You will also hear que without o in some fixed or connected patterns, but o que is a reliable form to start with when asking a direct question: O que aconteceu? (What happened?).
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O que você está estudando? | What are you studying? |
| O que aconteceu na reunião? | What happened at the meeting? |
| O que significa essa palavra? | What does this word mean? |
Compare the choice with the information you need
Ask yourself whether you want someone to choose among possibilities or explain/name something. Qual filme você viu? asks which film from the possible films. O que você viu? asks more broadly what the person saw—perhaps a film, a show, or an event.
Both forms can appear in natural questions about the same topic, but they guide the answer differently. The surrounding conversation, not just an English translation, tells you which one fits.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual idioma você quer praticar hoje? | Which language do you want to practice today? |
| O que você quer praticar hoje? | What do you want to practice today? |
| Qual é o seu endereço? | What is your address? (asking for one item of information) |
Build a complete question and invite a useful answer
Pair qual with a noun when you want to make the set clear: qual horário, qual restaurante, quais opções. For an open topic, begin with o que and add a verb: o que aconteceu, o que você precisa, o que prefere fazer.
When a question feels too direct, add por favor or a short context. For more question-word practice, continue with Real Life Portuguese guides to onde and quanto. An I Speak Portuguese teacher can help you hear these choices inside a conversation instead of as a vocabulary list.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual horário fica melhor para a aula? | Which time works better for the lesson? |
| O que você precisa levar para a viagem? | What do you need to take for the trip? |
| Quais opções estão disponíveis? | Which options are available? |
Remember: Use qual/quais to select from possibilities and o que to ask openly for information, an explanation, or the name of something.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use qual/quais to select from possibilities and o que to ask openly for information, an explanation, or the name of something.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
