Use se eu for for an open future possibility

Brazilian Portuguese often uses the future subjunctive after se when the speaker is talking about a future event that may or may not happen. For ser and ir, the eu form is for. The situation is still open: se eu for ao mercado depois, compro pão (if I go to the market later, I’ll buy bread).

The future subjunctive appears after other time words too, including quando, assim que, and enquanto, when they refer to an uncertain future event. The form often matches the personal infinitive for regular verbs, but common irregular forms such as for, fizer, and tiver are worth learning.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Use se eu for for an open future possibility
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Se eu for a Recife, vou visitar o centro antigo. If I go to Recife, I’ll visit the old center.
Quando você tiver tempo, me liga. When you have time, call me.
Se ela fizer a reserva hoje, escolhe a mesa.If she makes the reservation today, she’ll choose the table.

Use se eu fosse to imagine a hypothetical situation

Fosse is the imperfect subjunctive of ser and ir. In a conditional sentence, se eu fosse usually frames an imagined situation or one that is not currently true: se eu fosse você, descansaria (if I were you, I’d rest). The result often uses the conditional form such as faria, iria, or gostaria.

Compare an open possibility with an imagined one. Se eu for ao Brasil no ano que vem leaves the trip possible. Se eu fosse ao Brasil amanhã, precisaria cancelar meus planos can sound hypothetical when the speaker does not expect to go. Context matters, so treat these as useful patterns, not an automatic test of whether something is impossible.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Use se eu fosse to imagine a hypothetical situation
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Se eu fosse você, perguntaria de novo.If I were you, I’d ask again.
Se a gente tivesse mais tempo, visitaria o museu. If we had more time, we’d visit the museum.
Se eu for amanhã, aviso você.If I go tomorrow, I’ll let you know.

Remember: Use se + future subjunctive (se eu for) for an open future possibility. Use se + imperfect subjunctive (se eu fosse) for a hypothetical frame, often followed by a conditional result.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Use se + future subjunctive (se eu for) for an open future possibility. Use se + imperfect subjunctive (se eu fosse) for a hypothetical frame, often followed by a conditional result.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
