Sopa vs. Soap: A Simple Portuguese False Friend — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Sopa is food; soap is sabão or sabonete
Portuguese sopa means soup. English soap is sabão, often used for a cleaning bar or laundry product, or sabonete for a bar of soap used on the body. The exact word depends on the product and setting.
If you are ordering food, sopa belongs on the menu. If you are shopping for toiletries, ask for sabonete. Learn each word with the place where you would use it.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A sopa de legumes está quente. | The vegetable soup is hot. |
| Preciso comprar sabonete e xampu. | I need to buy soap and shampoo. |
| Tem sabão para lavar roupa? | Is there laundry soap? |
Choose the word by the situation
At a restaurant, sopa is a dish. In a bathroom or store, sabonete is personal soap; in a laundry context, sabão is a useful starting point. Asking for the product by its use can also help if a shop carries several kinds.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quero uma sopa pequena para começar. | I’d like a small soup to start. |
| Onde fica o sabonete líquido? | Where is the liquid hand soap? |
Remember: Remember the contrast: sopa is soup, sabão is soap for cleaning, and sabonete is personal soap.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Remember the contrast: sopa is soup, sabão is soap for cleaning, and sabonete is personal soap.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
