How to Study Portuguese as a Spanish Speaker Without Mixing the Two — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Give Portuguese its own sound and spelling routine
Keep a short daily listening habit with Brazilian voices. Listen to one or two sentences, identify the main idea, and repeat a phrase that contains a sound you are practising. Reading aloud helps you notice when Spanish spelling habits are steering your pronunciation.
Use the Portuguese spelling while you listen, especially for nasal vowels, nh, lh, and verb endings. Avoid writing a Spanish-looking pronunciation guide that you later have to unlearn.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Hoje vou estudar depois do almoço. | Today I’m going to study after lunch. |
| Minha família chega amanhã. | My family arrives tomorrow. |
| Quero ouvir essa frase de novo. | I want to hear that sentence again. |
Learn phrases with a situation, not only a translation
Save a phrase together with a short note about when a Brazilian speaker might use it. For example, keep a request, a response, and the setting together. This gives you a pattern that is easier to reuse than a list of isolated equivalents.
Use a monolingual Portuguese explanation when it is clear, and add an English or Spanish translation only as a temporary check. The phrase itself should stay visually and audibly Portuguese.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você pode me ajudar com este formulário? | Can you help me with this form? |
| Desculpa, não entendi a última parte. | Sorry, I didn’t understand the last part. |
| Vou pensar e te respondo mais tarde. | I’ll think about it and answer you later. |
Keep a small error log for interference patterns
When you mix the languages, record the Portuguese phrase you meant, what you actually said, and what caused the confusion. Sort the notes into sound, word meaning, grammar, or register. A short review of recurring patterns can guide your next practice session.
Do not label every transfer from Spanish as a failure. Shared vocabulary can help you understand; the goal is to notice when a guess needs checking and to build a reliable Portuguese version.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Esqueci meu guarda-chuva em casa. | I forgot my umbrella at home. |
| O escritório fica no segundo andar. | The office is on the second floor. |
| A gente combinou de se encontrar às sete. | We agreed to meet at seven. |
End each session by saying something of your own
After listening and reviewing, make one original sentence about your day. Change a person, place, or time in a phrase you already know, then say it aloud. This checks whether you can retrieve Portuguese directly instead of translating a whole sentence first.
Keep the session small enough to repeat tomorrow. A few minutes of focused practice with Brazilian audio can fit into an ordinary routine without turning every study day into a long grammar session.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Hoje eu trabalhei de casa. | Today I worked from home. |
| Depois do jantar, vou ouvir um podcast. | After dinner, I’m going to listen to a podcast. |
| Esta semana quero praticar mais a pronúncia. | This week I want to practise pronunciation more. |
Remember: Keep the practice short and Portuguese-first: listen, notice, repeat, and use one phrase in your own sentence.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Keep the practice short and Portuguese-first: listen, notice, repeat, and use one phrase in your own sentence.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
