Talk About Volleyball in Brazilian Portuguese: Court, Teams, and Score — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use the core volleyball words
Volleyball is vôlei in everyday Brazilian Portuguese. A volleyball match is a jogo de vôlei, a team is a equipe or time, and the court is the quadra. Praia means beach, so vôlei de praia is beach volleyball.
Use partida for a match and placar for the score. These words also appear in other sports, which makes them useful beyond volleyball.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você acompanha vôlei? | Do you follow volleyball? |
| O jogo começa às sete. | The match starts at seven. |
| Qual é o placar? | What’s the score? |
Ask about a point or a team
A point is a ponto. A set is a set; Brazilians also use set when talking about volleyball. Use quem está ganhando? to ask who is winning and quem você está apoiando? to ask who someone supports.
Brazil has a strong volleyball tradition, but people’s interests vary. These phrases let you join a conversation without assuming every Brazilian watches the sport.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quem está ganhando? | Who’s winning? |
| Foi ponto do Brasil? | Was that a point for Brazil? |
| Eu gosto mais de vôlei de praia. | I prefer beach volleyball. |
Remember: Start with vôlei, jogo, equipe, quadra, ponto, and placar. Add de praia when you mean beach volleyball, then use simple questions to follow the conversation.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Start with vôlei, jogo, equipe, quadra, ponto, and placar. Add de praia when you mean beach volleyball, then use simple questions to follow the conversation.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
