Tem Como? Ask Whether Something Is Possible in Brazilian Portuguese

Tem como fazer isso hoje? asks whether there is a way to do it today. It often functions as a practical possibility question, not a request for a definition of how. Name the action after ter como and listen for the condition that makes it possible or impossible.

    There is a way—or a person has a way

Semantica’s Brazilian Portuguese explanation of ter como describes the construction in terms of ability or having a way to do something. The examples below are new. The reference was checked on October 21, 2026.

    • Tem como mudar o horário? — “Is there a way to change the time?”
    • Eu tenho como chegar cedo. — “I have a way to get there early.”
    • Hoje não tenho como ir. — “Today I have no way to go.”

With eu, tenho names the speaker’s situation. Tem como can instead ask whether something is feasible in the circumstances. The question does not itself give permission, availability or a confirmed arrangement. You still need an answer before relying on the change.

Possibility is different from the method

    • Tem como enviar hoje? — “Is it possible to send it today?”
    • Como eu envio este arquivo? — “How do I send this file?”
    • Você tem como enviar este arquivo? — “Do you have a way to send this file?”

The first checks feasibility; the second asks for the procedure. The third can also function as a request, depending on context. A yes to feasibility may leave the method unanswered. If you need both, ask one question at a time instead of assuming the other person understood every part of your intention.

Original dialogue: possible, but only with a condition

A: Tem como marcar a conversa para amanhã?
Is there a way to schedule the conversation for tomorrow?

B: Tem, mas só depois das quatro.
    Yes, but only after four.

A: Às cinco funciona para você?
    Does five work for you?

B: Funciona. Vamos confirmar por mensagem.
    Yes. Let’s confirm by message.

B confirms a possibility within a limit. A proposes a time that fits the limit, and the final line identifies a confirmation step. The fictional exchange is not a live booking. In your own plans, include the date and time zone when needed.

Não tem como can sound categorical

Não tem como fazer hoje means there is no way to do it today in the stated situation. You can make the scope clearer: Com esse prazo, não tenho como terminar tudo hoje — “With that deadline, I have no way to finish everything today.” This explains a limitation rather than suggesting the task is impossible forever.

For a reply that keeps options open, add Posso fazer amanhã — “I can do it tomorrow” — only if that is true. Compare poder and conseguir for permission, possibility and managing an action. Ter como belongs in the same practical conversation, but it has its own recognizable structure.

Practice: choose the question you need

    1. You need instructions for sending a file. Choose Como eu envio? or Tem como enviar hoje?.
    2. Say that you cannot get there today, without claiming it is impossible every day.
    3. Someone answers Tem, mas só de manhã. What remains to arrange?
    4. Ask whether a schedule can change.
    5. Clarify the condition that blocks a task.
    Suggested answers and explanations
    1. Como eu envio? asks for the method. The other checks whether sending today is possible.
    2. Hoje não tenho como chegar aí. The word hoje limits the statement to today.
    3. The specific morning time and any other necessary details. Feasibility is not a complete appointment.
    4. Tem como mudar o horário? It asks if a change is possible, not how to read a clock.
    5. Com esse prazo, não tenho como terminar tudo hoje. The deadline and amount of work explain the scope of the limitation.
