Use vale a pena to recommend or evaluate an effort

Vale a pena is a common expression for saying that an action or experience is worthwhile. It can stand on its own as a question—vale a pena? (is it worth it?)—or introduce an infinitive: vale a pena visitar o museu (the museum is worth visiting).

The expression helps you ask about the value of an effort, not only its price. Use it for a restaurant, a route, a class, or time spent learning a new skill.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Use vale a pena to recommend or evaluate an effort
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Vale a pena chegar cedo para ver o pôr do sol. It’s worth arriving early to see the sunset.
Esse livro vale a pena?Is that book worth it?
Vale a pena aprender essas frases antes da viagem. It’s worthwhile to learn these phrases before the trip.

Change the tense to talk about a past choice

In the past, valeu a pena means ‘it was worth it’: a viagem valeu a pena (the trip was worth it). To say something is not worth the effort, use não vale a pena. The phrase can be followed by a noun or by an infinitive with its objects.

Do not confuse pena here with the English word ‘penalty.’ In this expression, translate the whole chunk instead of assigning a separate English meaning to every word.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Change the tense to talk about a past choice
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
O passeio foi longo, mas valeu a pena. The outing was long, but it was worth it.
Não vale a pena discutir por causa disso. It isn’t worth arguing about this.
A caminhada até a cachoeira valeu muito a pena. The hike to the waterfall was really worthwhile.

Remember: Use vale a pena for something worthwhile, valeu a pena for a past choice, and não vale a pena when the effort does not seem justified.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Use vale a pena for something worthwhile, valeu a pena for a past choice, and não vale a pena when the effort does not seem justified.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
