Meet Bruno and the teaching teamUseful phrases for getting around
These original phrases can help you ask for directions or find a place while traveling. Replace the examples with the destination you need.
| Portuguese | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Onde fica a praia? | Where is the beach? | Ask where a place is. |
| Como eu chego a Copacabana? | How do I get to Copacabana? | Ask how to reach a destination. |
| Fica perto daqui? | Is it near here? | Check whether a place is nearby. |
| Dá para ir a pé? | Can I walk there? | Ask whether walking is an option. |
| Você pode mostrar no mapa? | Can you show me on the map? | Ask for help understanding directions. |
Conhecer or visitar?
Both verbs can work when talking about a place. Visitar emphasizes making a visit: Quero visitar o Rio (“I want to visit Rio”). Conhecer often means going somewhere to experience or get to know it: Quero conhecer Copacabana (“I want to see/get to know Copacabana”).
Make a simple plan
- Quero passar o dia por aqui. — I want to spend the day around here.
- O que você recomenda fazer? — What do you recommend doing?
- Vamos combinar um horário? — Shall we agree on a time?
- Prefiro ir de manhã. — I prefer to go in the morning.
These phrases help you talk about your preferences; they do not suggest that any specific activity, route, or business is currently available.

It depends on what you like. Do you prefer the beach or a cultural outing?
Listen, notice, and retell
- Listen for the setting. Notice who is speaking and what kind of visit or situation is being described.
- Listen again for place and movement words. Write down any words you recognize about locations, directions, or plans.
- Retell it simply. Use primeiro (first), depois (then), and por fim (finally) to summarize what you understood.
