Ask a Professor for More Time on an Assignment in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Open with the course and assignment name
In an email or message, identify the class and assignment so the professor can find the right deadline. Use prazo de entrega for due date and atividade or trabalho for an assignment, depending on the course wording.
A polite opening such as Professor, bom dia is enough. Keep the subject line specific if you are writing by email.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Professor, bom dia. Tenho uma dúvida sobre o prazo do trabalho de história. | Good morning, Professor. I have a question about the history assignment deadline. |
| Estou escrevendo sobre a atividade que vence na sexta-feira. | I’m writing about the assignment due on Friday. |
| Sou estudante da turma de terça-feira à tarde. | I’m a student in the Tuesday afternoon class. |
Ask for more time without assuming the answer
Use seria possível entregar até…? (would it be possible to submit by…?) to make a clear request. State a date you can reasonably meet and ask whether the course allows an extension.
A professor may need to follow the same policy for everyone. Asking does not guarantee approval, so keep working toward the original deadline unless you receive a different answer.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Seria possível entregar o trabalho até segunda-feira? | Would it be possible to submit the assignment by Monday? |
| Gostaria de pedir mais dois dias, se isso estiver de acordo com as regras da disciplina. | I’d like to ask for two more days, if that is allowed by the course rules. |
| Existe alguma alternativa prevista para esta situação? | Is there an option provided for this situation? |
Explain only the context needed for the request
You can give a short explanation, such as a scheduling conflict or a personal situation, without sharing details you prefer to keep private. If documentation is required, ask which channel to use.
Show what you have already completed if that helps the professor understand your plan. Avoid attaching sensitive records to a class group chat.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Tive um imprevisto nesta semana e estou reorganizando o trabalho. | Something unexpected came up this week, and I’m reorganizing the assignment. |
| Já concluí a pesquisa e estou terminando a revisão. | I’ve completed the research and am finishing the revision. |
| Se precisar enviar algum comprovante, qual canal devo usar? | If I need to send documentation, which channel should I use? |
Confirm the due date and submission method
If the professor agrees, repeat the new deadline and ask whether you should submit through the same platform. If an extension is not possible, ask what part of the course policy you should review.
A short thank-you closes the exchange without implying that the professor must make an exception.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Obrigado por confirmar. Vou enviar pelo sistema até segunda-feira. | Thank you for confirming. I’ll submit through the system by Monday. |
| Entendi. Vou seguir o prazo original. | I understand. I’ll follow the original deadline. |
| Agradeço por explicar as opções. | Thank you for explaining the options. |
Remember: Identify the assignment, request a realistic date, and follow the course instructions you receive.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Identify the assignment, request a realistic date, and follow the course instructions you receive.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
